Transparent candles

Making candles transparent as water.

Absolutely transparent, like water, candles can be obtained in the following way: dissolve 5 parts of colorless gelatin in 20 parts of water, then add 25 parts of glycerin and heat the mixture until a clear solution is obtained. To it add 2 parts of tannin, dissolved by heating 10 parts of glycerin.

A cloudy solution is formed, but the haze disappears with further boiling of the mixture.

The finished mass is poured into ordinary candle molds. These candles burn quietly and without an unpleasant smell.

To make thin candles, it is enough to make a wick and lower it into the molten mass. Then raise, allow time for the mass to harden on the wick and lower it again. And so several times, until the desired thickness of the candle is obtained.

Various flavors can be added to the wick.

When buying tannin (at the pharmacy) ask if it is soluble in water. You only need one that is soluble. With insoluble, nothing will work.

How to make a colored candle flame

Candles with colored flame

To achieve a colored flame of a ready-made candle, you need to melt it, remove the wick and add salt to the melt, which causes color to appear in the flame:

After the introduction of salts into the melt of the candle mass and thorough mixing, the candle is re-molded using the old wick. If the candles are homemade, then the additive that colors the flame is introduced already at the stage of obtaining the candle mass.

Two tips for anyone lighting candles at home:

  • before lighting a candle, dip it in salt water: the candle will not float and will burn longer;
  • if you put a ring of aluminum foil 2-3 cm wide on the top of the candle, then the molten mass from it will not drip onto the table, and the burning time will increase.

Subtleties of coloring candles

Don't try to paint candles with watercolors or food coloring. If you decide to get serious about the candle making process, use powder paints, oil-based aniline paints or natural coloring agents. Sometimes wax pencils, Tintex and Rit dyes are used. Wax pencils are easiest to use, but they have their drawbacks. The main one is that a chemical reaction can occur, as a result of which the wick will be destroyed.

Other dyes often color the wax unevenly. It is best to use dyes that are soluble in wax. Look for candle dyes at leisure stores. Powder paints are ideal for coloring candles. Keep in mind that most wax dyes lighten as they cure, so experiment to find out how much dye to add.

Trying natural dyes is recommended. With the exception of indigo dyeing, the basic method for dyeing candles is simple: put the dye (flowers, leaves) in a nylon bag and put it in melted wax. The bottom of old nylon tights is ideal for making the bag.

Most fresh plant dyes give the wax a rich color in about an hour. If after this time the wax is not stained enough, remove the bag and replace it with another one with fresh dye. Heat the wax with the pouch until the wax is the desired color. If the shade is too saturated, add a little more wax and it will become lighter.

When dyeing wax with indigo, first add stearic acid to the hot wax, and then place a small bag with a tablespoon of indigo powder in it.

Stearic acid is essential for color extraction.

Bicolor candles

To make two-color astral candles, you need to alternately dip the wicks into jars of wax of different colors. Let's take a candlestick for the sign of Taurus as an example. In this case, red will be primary, yellow - secondary.

The first time, and then four more times (steps 3, 5, 7 and 9) dip the wick in red wax, and three times (steps 10, 11 and 12) dip the candle in yellow wax. Then dip it in red wax twice (or three or four, depending on how thick you want the candle to be). The last two times that only half of the candle should be waxed, dip it in yellow wax. Thus, you will have a candle, most of which will be red wax, and a smaller part will be yellow. The upper half will be red and the lower half yellow.

Another way to make a two-color candle: make three tapers - two primary and one secondary, and weave them together) while they are still soft; or make two candles of different colors and intertwine them. When dipping in wax and intertwining astral candles, focus on the properties of a particular astrological sign, if you are familiar with astrology. If astrology is an unfamiliar area for you, don't worry. Later, you will have to do some personalization of the candle one way or another.

Transparent and colored candles

Candles that are completely transparent and colorless, like water, can be obtained as follows: dissolve 5 parts of colorless gelatin in 20 parts of water, then add 25 parts of glycerin and heat the mixture until a clear solution is obtained. To it add 2 parts of tannin, dissolved by heating in 10 parts of glycerin. The turbidity formed when the solutions are combined will soon disappear with further boiling of the mixture. The finished mass is poured into ordinary candle molds. The candles thus obtained burn quietly without emitting any unpleasant odor.

By the way, many dyes dissolve well in glycerin, for example, aniline, food, ink for inkjet printers and even paste from a fountain pen. If you do not overdo it with paint, you get candles with delicate shades - sea wave, light pink, lemon yellow, etc.

You can make the candles multi-colored by sequentially pouring portions of a mass of different colors into the form. If the form is tilted and rotated until the next portion hardens, you get a unique riot of colors.

An even greater effect is given by injecting the tinted mass with a syringe. Inside the candle, colored balls or shapes of a different shape are obtained, depending on the movement of the syringe needle.

Since the candles are transparent, the wick also becomes a design element. You can weave it from multi-colored threads, tie it with bows, macrame, knit a miniature mitten or Santa's hat. Then hang it so that the resulting artwork is in about the lower third of the candle.

As a simple form for candles, you can use film jars - they have the necessary conical shape. After the mass has solidified, you need to take the candle by the wick and dip it in hot water. Along the walls, the mass softens, and the shape easily comes off the candle.

Given the unusual shape and appearance of these candles, it is easy to predict their commercial success. Try to release big parties for the New Year, parties on folklore themes, counting on tourists. Do not forget restaurants and cafes where candles are used as lighting or interior design, develop your own branded candle for each of the cafes.

If you want to make thin candles, then for this it is enough to tie the wicks (by the way, the wicks are made from cotton threads) to the board and lower them into the molten mass. Then raise, let the mass solidify on the wicks and lower it again, increasing the required thickness on the wicks. If you work with shapes, then make candles of the most unusual shapes and shapes. Try to add aromatic additives to the wick so that the candle will emit fragrant smells when it burns.

Making wax candles at home is fun. You can make the inhabitants of the zoo, a fantastic castle, a magical garden. The wax has a noble yellowish tint, which looks very beautiful, but is not always suitable for solving a creative problem. There are several ways to paint wax or paraffin.

Painting with wax crayons

The ideal material for coloring wax and paraffin is wax crayons. They already contain the essential fat-soluble dyes. For work, you will need 2 more pots or a special device for a water bath. The pots should be such that the smaller one can be hooked with the handles on the edges of the larger one. Rub the wax crayons of the desired color on a fine grater. Put the wax or paraffin in a smaller saucepan, add water to a larger one and bring to a boil. Melt the wax, add crumbled crayon to the resulting mass and mix thoroughly. Soak the wax or paraffin wax in a water bath until the color is uniform. Dye clumps may remain and are best removed.

Dyeing with dyes for wax

Aniline wax dyes can sometimes be found in hardware stores. They are also suitable for dyeing paraffin wax. These paints are available in the form of tablets or powders. The staining method is not much different from the previous one. The tablet must be thoroughly crushed, wax or paraffin - melted in a water bath. Pour in the dye, stir, hold the mass in a melted state until an even shade is obtained. In the same way, paraffin is dyed using colored candle scrap, so do not throw away the stubs of multi-colored candles, they may still come in handy. True, the color will turn out to be slightly lighter than the original one.

Coloring with natural materials

Many plants contain natural dyes that can be used to color wax. For example, marigolds give a rich yellow color, with the help of tansy you can dye the wax in various shades of green, the walnut peel will give your paraffin a delicate golden hue. For 1 kg of paraffin or wax, you need about 4 cups of tansy or marigold leaves. Leaves or flowers do not need to be chopped. It is enough to place them in a bag made of cotton or woolen fabric (that is, one that does not contain artificial fibers that can melt when the temperature rises). You need to add a little stearin to the paraffin, you can not add anything to the wax. Melt paraffin or wax in a water bath. Dip a bag of flowers or leaves into the mass and watch the process, stirring occasionally. Keep in mind that melted wax is slightly brighter than the hardened finished product.

Finished product coloring

You can also paint a product cast from wax or paraffin. In this case, it is better to use wax crayons. Crush the chalk to make a powder, melt in a water bath. Add a little wax or paraffin (depending on the material of the product), stir. Dip the finished product into the paint and remove quickly.

There are many options to make your candle unique. One of them is to color the candle.

When I first started making candles, there was not much on hand as a candle dye. And most importantly, there was little literate at hand. After all, mixing paraffin and dyes is all sorts of chemical reactions, and you need to be careful with this.

And yet I wanted color. I started with gouache.

Bad, very bad. Fortunately, I have not preserved a single candle painted in this way. The fact is that it is almost impossible to paint the candle mass with gouache: small particles of gouache settle to the bottom of the kindling, and even if you shake the paint a little when filling the mold with wax, it still settles. It turns out a very pale shade, and from this it is cloudy and unkempt.

For a long time I tormented the fragments of the candles, melting them over and over again until they turned into something ugly and dirty. I just decided to stop pouring paraffin for a while. Until I find a good alternative to poor staining.

Once I was just visited by nostalgia (I still wanted to pour, albeit without normal dyes). And I on "maybe" poured into the melted wax EARTH FROM THE BOARD WITH FLOWERS !!! It looked, of course, funny, a white candle, at the bottom of which something dark shines through. It seems at first glance there are no shortcomings. Especially when the candle is off :)

Very soon the fire reached the "earthen" layer, and began to smell of fertilizers. The melted wax began to fizzle, which is not good for you and me. Because you never know what, could spit a mixture of hot paraffin and earth. Here, in the next photo, you can clearly see how the wax sizzled due to the super dye. Don't do that.

Part two, Optimistic.

And so, hurray, I didn’t peep anywhere, but just remembered that I have wax crayons. Once I painted the walls of my room on Tulskaya. Since the crayons are wax, it means that by adding small pieces, you can paint the candle mass.

Such crayons can be found anywhere: in children's stores, in a bookstore, in a stationery store. These things are produced by different companies, Crayola, for example. The boxes cost 150 rubles maximum. But I'll tell you right away: look for cheaper, because it is. If anything, I can buy you for 70 of your rubles and transfer it to Moscow. In general, in Zelenograd you can find so many things rare and cheaper :) Come here, come to visit :)

  • To paint your candle mass, you only need a few mm of crayon thickness.
  • Some do not completely color the molten paraffin, and the existing white candles are dipped in a colored wax / paraffin melt. The choice is yours! It's just a matter of convenience!
  • In addition to single-color candles, you can also make multi-colored ones! Just fill the shape with some color, wait for the first layer to cool down a bit, and fill in another layer. You need to wait so that the hot paraffin does not melt and stir the colors.

Handmade is gaining more and more popularity. Extravagant jewelry, paintings, toys, decorative elements, gifts - this is just a small part of what passionate craftsmen and amateurs create with their own hands. Today we will talk about how to make a candle at home.

This process does not require special skills and devices. After reading our recommendations and detailed master classes, even beginners can start this exciting process.

CREATING A CANDLE: GETTING STARTED

Making candles with your own hands is much easier than you might think. And the main advantage of this activity is that the necessary materials are readily available. If you look well, you will even find them in your home.

MATERIALS FOR A DIY CANDLE

Wax, stearin, or paraffin wax are best for the job. Moreover, for beginners it is better to start acquaintance with the latter, it is the least whimsical to use. You can purchase paraffin wax from the store or use leftover white candles.

WICK

It is best to use natural threads as a wick, ideally thick cotton threads. Do not try to use synthetics: such a wick will quickly burn out and leave behind an unpleasant odor. To test the thread for naturalness, just light the tip of it. If it melts, forming a solid ball at the end, you have synthetics in front of you.

If you have conceived an unusual candle and are thinking how to make an original wick for it, then use colored floss threads. It is a great and natural material.

Remember important rule: The thicker the candle, the thicker the wick should be.

It is easy to do it yourself. To do this, prepare a solution: dissolve 1 tablespoon of salt and 2 tablespoons of boric acid in a glass of water. Soak a cotton thread or floss in it for 12 hours. Then dry them and twist them into a tourniquet or braid.

If this process seems tedious to you, carefully remove the wick from the finished household candle and use it.

CANDLE SHAPE

First of all, decide on the configuration of the desired candle, and then try to find a hollow object of the same shape. You may find it useful:

Milk and juice cartons;
. plastic cups from yoghurts and desserts;
... shells from eggs;
... silicone molds for baking;
... glass goblets, wine glasses, wine glasses and glasses;
... children's pies;
... curly forms for ice cream;
... tin and glass coffee jars;
... empty cans.

The only requirement is that the mold material must withstand heating up to 100 ° C.

Another interesting option is to pour candles into beautiful transparent glasses. They will not be available, but they will look very stylish and unusual.

Sometimes scented candles are made in tangerine or orange peel. The fruit is pre-cut in half and the pulp is carefully removed. You can also use large shells or coconut shells.

DYES

A white candle is elegant but boring. Naturally, the question arises of how to paint paraffin in order to get bright interior decorations.

For lovers of candlelight, it is best and cheapest to take wax crayons for children's creativity. Looking for a special candle? Look for pearlescent crayons - your creation will be unique.

Do not try to use water-soluble gouache or watercolor - you will be in for a fiasco. The dye will inevitably settle to the bottom or flocculate. The finished product will look very unpresentable.

WARE FOR MELTING PARAFFIN

In order to melt the paraffin wax, you will need a small saucepan for the steam bath and an iron bowl. Experienced craftsmen recommend drowning paraffin in a steam bath, considering other methods, including a microwave oven, to be fire hazardous.

We recommend that you also use this method, proven over the years, for a start: place a bowl of paraffin in a container with boiling water. If the candle is planned to be colored, add the crayon immediately and stir the melted mass several times to obtain a uniform color.

FLAVORS AND DECOR

Any materials at hand are suitable for decorating candles. First, decide on the topic of your work. Pebbles and shells will effectively complement the nautical-style candles. For the New Year theme, use beads, small cones, small decorative balls, ribbons and bows. Decorate Valentine's Day candles with hearts, glitter bows, dried flowers, coffee beans, etc.

Homemade candles are best scented with essential oils, which can be purchased at your nearest pharmacy. Another option is to find vanilla cinnamon in your kitchen. It is worth adding flavors to the melted paraffin at the very end, after dyeing.

Materials (edit)

Before making colored candles with your own hands, prepare:

Transparent wax;
wax pencils;
disposable paper cups;
glass cups;
wicks;
ice cream sticks;
aroma oils;
microwave oven;
grater.

Step 1. Grate regular transparent wax and fill paper cups with the resulting material. It is only necessary to fill them with this material by a quarter.

Step 2. Send the glass to the microwave for 45 seconds. Get it out. Stir the wax wooden stick... It should melt completely, if this has not happened, send the glass to the oven for another 30 seconds.

Step 3. Dip the wick into an empty glass cup. You can attach the other end to an ice cream stick and place it on top of the cup. This will make it easier for you to continue working. Pour some wax into a glass and wait for it to set. Thus, the wick must be fixed in the center of the cup.

Step 4. Remove the paper wrapper from the wax crayons. Rub them on a grater and add the desired color of crayons to separate cups of wax. For a third of the wax glass, add shavings of one pencil to get a fairly saturated color.

Step 5. Send a glass of colored wax to the microwave for 2.5 minutes. Take it out and add a few drops of your chosen aroma oil while stirring. You don't have to, but with oil your candles will exude a pleasant scent.

Step 6. While holding the wick, pour the first layer of colored wax into the glass. For an interesting pattern, tilt the cup at an angle and hold it there until the wax grabs.

Step 7. In the same way, melt the cups with wax of a different color and also, but at the opposite angle, pour them one by one into a glass cup. Always fix the container in different provisions until the wax has set.

Step 8. Having formed a multi-colored candle, let the wax cool completely.

Bright and unusual candles are ready. You can use them for their intended purpose or give them to friends as souvenirs.

For work you will need:
... paraffin;
... optional dye and flavor;
... wick and holder for it;
... cylindrical shape;
... small ice cubes.

Melt the paraffin wax in a water bath. If the candle is supposed to be colored, color the candle mass, if you wish, you can also flavor it.

Place the wick in the mold so that it reaches the bottom of the mold. Do not forget to attach it to the top of the makeshift holder. Fill in crushed ice, not reaching a couple of centimeters to the edges.

Pour the melted candle mass into the mold. Leave the workpiece until the paraffin has cooled completely. In this case, of course, the ice will melt, and cavities will form inside the candle.

MASSAGE CANDLES

The main ingredient for making a massage candle is soy wax. By adding useful components to it, you can get a product that has healing properties. It no longer acts as a decor, but as a home cosmetic product which makes the skin soft and well-groomed.

The healing properties of essential oils:

Lemon essential oil will help to rejuvenate the skin and unclog pores.
... Orange oil has an anti-cellulite effect.
... Rose oil stimulates the regeneration of skin cells and contributes to the elasticity of the skin.
... Rosemary oil can cleanse the skin of age spots and make it smooth.
... Patchouli oil does a great job of moisturizing.
... Lavender oil will delight you with its healing effect.

Solid vegetable oils are also added to massage candles. For example, cocoa butter is used to moisturize and tone the skin. And with its regular use, beauticians promise you smooth and delicate skin.

Exotic shea butter can save dry skin from flaking. Coconut oil, which is rich in natural antioxidants, can smooth the skin.

General algorithm for creating a massage candle:

1. melt the wax with hard oils in a water bath;
2. Let the mixture cool slightly and add liquid oils;
3.Cool the mass a little more and add essential oils, extracts and vitamins;
4. pour the resulting candle mass into the mold, after inserting the wick into it;
5. Wait until the candle has completely hardened and remove it from the mold;
6. The hardened candle is ready to use.

We offer you the most common recipes for effective massage candles.

WE DECORATE CANDLES IN DECOUPAGE TECHNIQUE

If you don't have a dye, but want to create something bright and memorable, don't be discouraged. The simplest candle made from stubs can be turned into a work of art. To do this, you need to have a little patience and decorate the product to your liking.

CANDLE DECORATED WITH DRY FLOWERS

Dried leaves, stems and flowers will help you create an exclusive candle, which will be almost impossible to repeat. The use of natural materials is limited only by the local flora and your imagination. This is when the ability to collect a herbarium will come in handy to you in full.

* photo by Lyudmila Klimova

For work you will need:
... any dried flowers;
... 2 candles - for decoration and regular;
... tea spoon;
... tweezers;
... nail scissors;
... paraffin wax for the final coating.

From the dried flowers you have available, compose the composition that you want to bring to life.

Heat a teaspoon over an ordinary burning candle (with the inside over the fire, because the spoon will turn black a little, and in order not to stain the candle - then we will carry out all the manipulations with the other side of the spoon).

Attach a dry flower to the candle to be decorated and gently iron its petals with the outer side of a spoon so that they melt to the paraffin and do not stick out. Thick stems may need to be ironed several times while heating the spoon.

Excess stems that go beyond the candle, carefully cut off with scissors.

Glue the rest of the elements in the same way, choosing the desired location for them. Make sure that the edges of the leaves and petals do not stick out.

It remains to consolidate the result. Melt the paraffin in a water bath, pour it into a container into which you can completely dip the decorated candle.

Holding the candle by the wick, immerse it in the melted paraffin wax, place it on a flat surface and let it cool. If the petals were poorly smoothed and sticking out tips are still visible, repeat this procedure again.

Such an elegant candle will win any heart and will not be left without attention. Complete it with a beautiful candlestick and it will become a unique decoration for your home.

DECOUPAGE CANDLES WITH PAPER NAPKINS

The desire to decorate a candle could come instantly, but there are no dried flowers at hand. In this case, paper napkins can be dispensed with. With their help, you can easily decorate a candle for any holiday.

Choose a napkin with the pattern you want. Cut out the desired items from the napkin. Carefully remove the bottom two layers of paper from the resulting blanks. Further, the principle of operation is similar to decorating with dried flowers.

Place the prepared element on the candle and iron it with a hot spoon. Sand the cooled surface with the rough side of a regular kitchen sponge. It is not necessary to immerse the candle in melted paraffin with this method.

Your masterpiece is ready. Make a beautiful arrangement of candles in new year style, fir branches and colored balls. She will bring to your home good mood and a festive atmosphere.
