Overview of sewing machine feet. Sewing machine feet: description, purpose Sewing pintuck foot

Today, a complete set of feet is included with any sewing machine. And sometimes some are puzzled by their purpose. But if you understand what each of them is for, then sewing will turn out to be more interesting for you, and some operations will be less routine.

In addition to the usual paws, the following paws can be found in the kit, well, or, if necessary, buy the necessary ones:

Teflon foot

Designed for sewing products from genuine leather, leatherette and coated fabrics. It doesn't stick when you sew vinyl, plastic, leather or imitation leather. You can also use the Teflon foot for normal sewing or when making buttonholes on plastic or leather fabric.

Roller foot

Instead of the Teflon foot, you can use the roller foot, which uses torque to move the fabric forward. The foot has a rotating roller that allows you to roll under it fabric of any structure, be it 100% leather, or felt, or corduroy. When sewing with this foot, the stitches are uniform in length. With the foot it is very good to pass any thickenings on the fabric.

Which of these two legs to give preference, the selected fabric will tell. The roller foot also works well with heavy materials, some types of raincoat and jacket fabrics.

Zipper foot, universal

The zipper can be sewn on using a regular straight or zigzag foot. But it is possible to sew on a zipper with a high quality and neat, stitching next to the "teeth" only with the help of a special foot. It can be one-sided, two-sided and narrow. The main task is to help the needle to make an even seam at the same distance from the edge of the "zipper" without turning the product.

Invisible zipper foot

But to sew a secret zipper is possible only with the help of a "secret foot", which has two grooves on the sole. A regular foot or even a zipper foot will not work for this. The foot has special grooves, in which the teeth of the fastener are in a fixed position, which allows you to make a straight stitch close to the fastener. As a result, the hidden "zipper" is easily, quickly and neatly sewn to the product.

Edge sewing foot

Sometimes it is very difficult to lay an even finishing line along the edge of the product. With the edge sewing foot, you can easily handle this task.

Blind hem foot

Designed for hemming the edges of dresses, trousers that require special care with a secret stitch. The blind hem foot is suitable for discreet hemming of heavy to medium weight fabrics. Now there is no need to hem the product by hand.

Cord sewing foot

You can beautifully decorate the product with a cord using this foot. In this case, depending on the thickness of the cord, you can sew one, two or three cords at the same time. The foot has a guide that guides the cord along the fabric, and the needle stitches evenly over its surface. The foot has special holes for cords, decorative threads and is intended for decorating products using various decorative stitches.

Beading foot

With this foot, you can quickly and accurately sew beads onto a product and decorate it.

Foot for sewing on braids (elastic bands, sequins)

The foot is used for sewing braids, ribbons, piping and more. decorative elements, up to 5mm wide, can also be used for sewing on an elastic band. Perfect for decorating clothes with various elements.

Button sewing foot

The sewing-on foot holds the button in place while sewing on.

Buttonhole foot

Buttonholes can be made quickly and accurately only on a sewing machine that has a special foot in the kit.
The buttonhole on the sewing machine can be sewn automatically, semi-automatically and manual mode... In order not to control the length of the buttonhole in the foot, you need to install a button and do not forget to pull down the vertical lever for switching the machine stroke down to the stop.

Binding foot

The binder foot is used to sew a bias tape in one step. The snail on the foot wraps a strip of fabric and guides it in front of the needle. Can be used for zigzag, decorative stitching or regular straight stitching.

Gathering foot

With the help of this foot, ruffles and flounces are made. The foot is a small double plate with a slot over the entire surface. The material to be assembled is placed under the foot, and the fabric to which the assembly will be attached is placed in the slot. The foot can perform three functions at once: to assemble, to process the edge and to sew a shuttlecock to another fabric.

Pintuck foot

Clothes and home textiles are often decorated with tucks. In the special pintuck foot there are grooves into which the fabric is pulled during sewing, as a result of which a relief fold appears. Pintucking occurs when sewing with a twin needle. There are feet for sewing two, three and five tucks, evenly spaced from each other. Before work, you must select the stitch length and put on the machine a twin needle. The twin needle seams the tucks on both sides with parallel stitches.

Hemming foot

Despite the fact that processing the bottom of the product with a hemmed seam with a closed cut is a rather uncomplicated sewing procedure, it still requires considerable effort. Marking, ironing, temporary hand stitches, etc. etc. There is a way to get rid of this routine, use the special foot of the sewing machine - the foot for hemming the edges of products. (twist foot, hem foot, hem foot, hem foot, hem foot, hemmer, chopper foot, hem foot)

Jersey foot

A rubber pad attached to the foot tightens and holds the fabric under the needle, preventing it from sagging and jamming between the feed dog teeth. And this is the main problem that arises when sewing delicate fabrics and knitwear. The knitted foot does an excellent job with it, forming an even stitch without unnecessary effort.

Overlock foot

The special device of the overcasting foot includes the presence of an additional pin, with the help of which the sewing is carried out along the edge of the overcasting fabric. The fabric does not shrink or curl when sewing. When overcasting with special overlock stitches, the overlock foot guides will help you get a straight, regular stitch around the edge of the fabric, and the fabric will feed smoothly without piling to the side. Without such an overlock foot, overcast the edges with a simple zigzag or some other specialized overlock stitch, be sure to leave a small allowance around the edge, which does not allow the fabric to pull together when overcasting. Then this allowance is trimmed with scissors.

Of course, the modification of the legs depends on the model of the machine for which it is intended, and you need to choose based on this. One and the same foot can differ in color, material (plastic, iron, Teflon, etc.), additional elements (screws, springs, etc.). When choosing, be sure to read the instructions or consult with the seller, all this will help you in this difficult matter.

The pintuck foot is one of the most popular sewing machine accessories. Different seams can be created using different presser feet. The final appearance of the seam and the finished product, its functionality and durability depend on the quality and functional potential of the legs.

Standard set of sewing feet

The modern garment industry allows the use of a large number of presser feet and other machine accessories. The question is the expediency of a model with a large set of legs, since you still need to be able to sew on it. For industrial complexes you need professional or semi-professional equipment, since you will have to work with tasks of varying degrees of complexity. But for small business or home use can be limited to a standard machine with a standard set of sewing feet.

You don't need any special skills to attach an accessory to a car. For this, most models have a standardized holder. The equipment comes with several types of legs, which can be changed depending on the need. You can also adjust the position of the foot. More is not needed to prepare the equipment for use.

The set of sewing feet provides three to five options for accessories: a universal foot, for a zipper, for a zigzag stitch and a buttonhole (semi-automatic). In more expensive models from manufacturers Janome or Brother the set includes 10-15 models of fixtures. To make it easier to use them, the machine itself has a special recess (compartment) where the legs are placed. If the required pair of legs is missing in the standard set, you can always buy them. The only requirement is that both the foot and the machine must be of the same firm, otherwise the nozzle will not be fastened tightly enough.

A standard set of pintuck feet consists of 3-5 models (photo: world-sewing-machines.ru)

The convenience of most modern machines is that it is no longer necessary to remove the foot fastening screw with a screwdriver during replacement. There is a special lever for this at the back of the foot, which, when pressed, is detached from the sole of the foot. To fix the new one, it is enough to lower the presser foot into the socket of the sole. A characteristic click indicates the correctness of the movements, but it is better to play it safe and raise the presser foot lever up. If the sole is fixed conscientiously, it will also rise up.

Types of feet for different seams

Zigzag. The most versatile foot, as it allows you to sew straight stitches and zigzags. The accessory is suitable for most types of fabrics. Some housewives even prefer the zigzag attachment instead of the standard one.

For sewing in zippers. These accessories can be used in two modes. The first allows you to sew fasteners into garments. At the same time, you do not need to spend additional efforts on turning at the bottom. The foot reliably presses the fabric, so there are no problems with the direction of the stitch (it can be constantly visually monitored). This foot is also convenient for sewing fabric on both sides. For this, there are two grooves for the movement of the needle. So the accessory is relevant for working with edging. Moreover, the wide edge is stitched like a lightning, and the narrow one is closer to the edge of the product.

In addition to those listed above, much wider legs are used to work with zippers. They can have different sizes, the configuration of the front zone of the tissue collection.

An exception is the foot for a hidden zipper. If you try to sew this piece with a standard nozzle, at some point the fabric will jam and may deteriorate. The special Aurora pintuck foot has a recess for excess fabric, so this is not a problem.

For knitwear. This view fabric is considered capricious, since it can deform due to awkward movement. Most often, beginner seamstresses suffer from this, since a thread or fabric gets into the needle grip zone. A special foot allows you to avoid such a scenario with an additional stop. For more convenience, more expensive models have rubber or silicone pads. Thanks to them, working with fabric is a pleasure.

Pintuck feet: functions, varieties

For cords and pintucking. These accessories can be identified by the special lugs on the sole. The pintuck foot helps you gather fabric easily. Different types nozzles allow you to create pintucks different shapes... In addition to ease of use, such an accessory allows you to realize a number of possibilities. This foot is designed for sewing on and decorating cords, so the finished product is strong and creative.

Some models of the feet have grooves in the sole, and some have special holes through which the cords are passed.

For hemming. This foot should be in the arsenal of a seamstress who works with light, almost weightless materials. The most common practice of sewing silk products. Not every housewife can cope with such a delicate and capricious material, since the fold on the fabric should be minimal. Otherwise, the product will turn out to be too heavy and there will be no airy effect.

The attachment is designed to grip a small area of fabric, while folding is carried out as carefully as possible.

With top conveyor. A distinctive feature of such a device is the supply of material from above. But other methods of filing are also available for her. To work with such a foot, you need a special skill. But if you master it, you can pinch several layers of fabric without problems without moving them relative to each other.

Another advantage of the accessory is the ability to create stitches with the same distance. For this purpose, the feet are equipped with a stop that can be adjusted horizontally and used as a ruler.

For bias inlay. Working with a bias binding is one of the most difficult operations. For this, the edges, on both sides of the material, should be located as evenly as possible. The process is complicated by the fact that the edge is not visible from the reverse side. When working with a special foot, everything is much easier. You can insert the tape, tighten the fabric in the foot, and depress the foot control of the sewing machine. The only task of the seamstress is to carefully pull the tape through the foot.

To create assemblies. Creating beautiful folds in fabric is a task for an experienced craftswoman. Not all budget cars have a special mechanism. Often such paws need to be bought in addition, but they fully justify themselves.

What sewing machine feet are really needed

Not all housewives in everyday life need a huge selection of legs. It is enough to restrict ourselves to the following.

Before using the special pintuck foot, you need to decide what it is for. If the machine is used occasionally and you have to deal with standard seams and materials, there is no point in buying professional technician... It is enough to restrict yourself to an ordinary budget machine, which is equipped with the following types of feet: universal, overlock and buttonhole sewing. The first is for all stitches on the sewing machine. Overlock is used when overcasting materials in order to prevent them from shedding. It is usually needed when working with carpets, heavy fabrics, and when processing swimwear fabrics. But it can also be used to decorate the edges of the cuffs or sleeves. The buttonhole foot is used for sewing plackets and collars. Typically, the machine operates in a semi-automatic mode.

Model characteristics

Different models of feet have their own characteristics. Below are the most popular options.

Bernina foot 34 - for reverse stitches 030 770 72 00. This model is designed for creating utility and decorative stitches. Its cost is approximately 1500-1600 rubles. The model is equipped with a transparent sole, thanks to which you can constantly monitor the sewing area. So accidental change of stitch direction and damage to the material are excluded.

For more information on how pintucks are made with the feet, see the video below.

Sewing machine feet are the main components, without which the sewing process is impossible. Standard sewing machine feet - universal, straight stitch, for sewing in zippers, for sewing buttonholes. In addition to them, there are many special feet, for example, a foot for sewing in a hidden zipper, for sewing on buttons, for satin stitches, for sewing on a cord, for making a blind seam, for darning, embroidery and many others.

By the way, many do not even use them, although they are included with the typewriter. And all these paws lie in special compartments for storing accessories for years. But each of them is a little helper who is able not only to facilitate the sewing process, but also to speed up and improve the quality of individual operations. For example, sewing leather and suede products, knitwear and jeans, silk and chiffon using special feet will become a convenient and easy process.

A description of the use of standard feet is in the instructions for sewing machine... But, as a rule, it is rather scarce, and for additional accessories it is completely absent.

Types of sewing machine feet

Gathering foot

It can be used to make a gathered stitch on a typewriter and save time. The density of the gather is regulated by the tension of the upper thread and the stitch width. With a wider stitch, the gathering is denser. Thin fabrics grip more, thick and dense fabric less.

To get the expected result with this operation, try gathering on the piece of fabric you are going to sew the garment first. Cut a piece to a specific length and see how long you get the assembly. This way, you can calculate the full length of the ruffle.

Upper feed or walking foot

allows you to sew several layers of fabric at the same time without shifting them. Copes with the stitch of products. This foot is used for patchwork and quilting.

In some models, the top transport is already built into the sewing machine.

Teflon foot

Designed for sewing products from genuine leather, leatherette and coated fabrics. Instead of the Teflon foot, you can use the roller foot, which uses torque to move the fabric forward. Which of these two legs to give preference, the selected fabric will tell. The roller foot also works well with heavy materials, some types of raincoat and jacket fabrics.

Today, there are combined models on sale - a Teflon foot with a roller.

Universal zipper foot

In addition to its main task, it can be used for finishing the product with edging. If the edging is narrow, then you need to sew it on like a zipper. If wide, close to the edge.

Snail foot for sewing on bias tape

Eliminates the manual basting process and significantly speeds up the process. To work with it, it is enough to cut a strip of fabric along the oblique of the desired width, tuck it into the foot and you can sew. It turns out neat and beautiful.

The Bias Trim Foot is suitable for both finished and unfolded. The finished inlay is inserted higher through the slot in the "snail". And unfolded - into the main hole of the foot.
If there are several holes in the "snail" and they different sizes, which means that with the help of such a foot, you can sew tapes of various widths. These holes also make it easier for the bias tape to move forward.

Jersey foot

useful for those who do not have an overlock. It makes it easier to work with such sewing units as darts, hem and sleeves, neck stitching on jerseys.

Universal Bias Trim Foot

Suitable for sewing on any bias tape, any width - the screw on the foot allows you to set the required width. The foot is easy to use as it can be easily attached to the machine and also easily removed. And the result exceeds all expectations.

Pintuck foot

Provides an ideal process - the speed of the operation increases, the quality increases, the labor costs are reduced, the tucks are even and at the same distance from each other. Before starting work, mark the line for the first line. In order to make the tucks more textured, convex, put a special plastic tongue under the fabric (they come in different sizes). Very narrow pintucks, 1 mm wide, are made with buttonhole thread.

Edge sewing foot

It will help to lay an even finishing line along the edge of the product.

Haven't used twin needles on your sewing machine yet? Now you will find out how many decorative and other possibilities it can be used in creating clothes.

To use twin needles, you need:

  • front threading
  • the presence of a zigzag stitch in the sewing machine.
  • the distance between the needles must not exceed the maximum zigzag width of your machine!

    Preparatory operations.

  • Install a twin needle on your clipper, like a regular single needle.

If your machine has two spool holders, set the spools so that one thread of the spool unwinds clockwise and the other counterclockwise. This will prevent the threads from tangling when sewing.

  • Further, both threads are threaded along the thread guides in the same way, both threads go side by side and only before threading into the needles, the threads diverge along different guides: one thread on the left, the other on the right.

If you do not have two thread guides, insert one thread into the thread guide and leave the other free.

  • Thread the threads into the appropriate needles. The machine is now ready to sew. I advise you to sew at the lowest speed, this will also help prevent tangling of the threads.

    Decorative stitches (embroidery)
Does your machine have decorative stitches? Try using twin needles to decorate your garment with these stitches.

The twin needle allows you to sew two parallel patterns at the same time. You can thread the upper threads in different colors.

If using narrow needles 1.8 - 2.5 mm, the stitch patterns will overlap each other, creating a shadow effect.

For decorative stitches, use a needle size smaller than the maximum zigzag width on your sewing machine!

    Sew on the braid
Insert a needle slightly narrower than the width of the tape into the needle clamp and attach the satin stitch foot to the sewing machine. This foot has a wide groove on the sole.

Adjust the machine adjusters to the straight stitch and the desired stitch length. Loosen the upper thread tension. Pass the tape through the needle hole of the foot (or under the foot).

Bring the fabric under the foot, lower the needles into the fabric, and sew. The tape is attached to the fabric from both sides at the same time.

    Gathers with elastic
Wrap a thin sewing elastic band (like a Hungarian) around the bobbin. The upper threads should match the fabric and color.

Set the stitch length to 2-2.5 mm and sew with a straight stitch.

An elastic tucked into the hook mechanism will create uniform gathers on thin fabric. Admire how the application of this technique has beautified the blouse.

    Raised pintucks on fabric
For the following embellishments, you will need a special pintuck foot. The foot has grooves on the sole, into which the fabric is pulled during sewing, as a result of which a relief fold appears.

Different fold sizes require different feet. The wider and deeper the grooves, the more voluminous the relief can be obtained. Multiple parallel grooves on the foot allow you to lay flat reliefs relative to each other.

    Fleece relief
How much time do you spend knitting a sweater? Try knitting the sweater in one day using a twin needle. Believe me, it's very simple and fast!

For reliefs like the one in the photo, you need a fleece and a twin needle of at least 5mm. Such reliefs will look beautiful on velvet.

    Cord relief
For sewing on the cord, use a twin needle that is wide (the distance between the needles) so that the cord passes freely between the needles.

Attach any foot suitable for sewing on a cord: the beading foot or the large raised tuft foot.

  • Draw a straight or curly line on the fabric with a chalk or disappearing felt-tip pen where you want the cord to be trimmed.
  • Pin the end of the cord to the beginning of the line on the wrong side of the fabric.
  • Slide the fabric with the cord under the foot, make sure that the cord fits exactly between the needles and start sewing with a straight stitch following the line drawn on the fabric.

This is how the "embossed with a cord" finish on the blouse looks like. And these figured reliefs are made on a transparent fabric with a backing of cords in a contrasting color.

    Sewing knitwear
For jersey sewing, use special jersey sewing needles 4-5 mm wide.

In the photo, the hem is made with a 4 mm needle. On the front side there is a double straight stitching, from the inside "zigzag", which allows the knitted fabric to stretch. This stitch simulates overlock sewing.

  • Set the straight stitch and the desired stitch length on the machine.
  • Fold in the cut of the jersey, and stitch the right side of the stitch at the same distance from the fold.
  • Trim the seam allowance neatly close to the zigzag.

To always have a cheat sheet at hand, you can download or print handy tables with recommendations for the use of twin needles.

Twin needle stitch patterns were made on a Janome model My Excel 23X. This machine has a maximum zigzag width of 6.5 mm.
