Each photo can be processed in different ways, highlight certain shapes in it, emphasize the color or even create an incredible effect. This time we'll look at an example of a simple artistic treatment.

Each series of photographs will require an individual approach. Everything will change depending on the plot, terrain and used compositional elements. If you work with a lot of photos, then color grading is easiest in Lightroom. Individual shots can then be retouched in Photoshop.

Any processing must begin with analysis.

If the picture was initially taken without overexposures and dips in the shadows, then this greatly facilitates processing and to some extent determines the style of processing.

Light and shadow fall on the model very harmoniously, but the volume is not enough. There are also problems with colors. There are extra colors in the picture. You will also need to work with shades.

With the photo open in Lightroom, go to the "Develop" module.

The first tab we need is General. In our case, we need to raise the exposure a little. This will make the picture brighter. The light needs to be removed to -100. This will add volume to the sky. Some hidden details in the clouds will also be highlighted. Then we lighten the shadow a little so that details appear in the shadow areas. Next, add brightness by increasing the whites. To maintain contrast and volume, the Black slider needs to be moved a little to the left.

Use the Sharpness tool to add micro-contrast.

Now let's calibrate the camera. Go to the tab of the same name. IN this section you can get rid of excess color. Which settings to choose is up to you. Further processing of task envy. We need to make the red more saturated and warmer. The green will get colder. If you lower the saturation of the green, then the red will become deeper.

Now, to add softness and warmth, you need to reduce the amount of blue and cyan.

Go back to the basic settings and adjust the white balance. We do not have to make the image realistic, since the girl is supposed to fly away on balloons to the sky, being chained to the ground. With such a plot, you can make a fabulous processing.

Now go to the Separate Toning tab. In the shadows, add a little blue, and in the light areas, a little pale olive. These colors can help reduce excessive amounts of red. Blue gives contrast to colors and increases volume.

Now let's move on to "Curves". The values will be unique for each snapshot. In our case, the settings are as follows:

Curves are one of best tools to work with color. Also, this tool makes significant changes to the image, so you need to work with it carefully.

At this stage, you can lose volume. You have to work with each color separately to keep everything under control.

You can end there. We just crop the picture, add sharpness if necessary. You can add vignette and grain as desired.

The main work is over, but that's not all. Export the image as a 16-bit TIFF file and open it in Photoshop.

You can, of course, process a photo for several hours, adding various elements, but we are not preparing a photo for a beauty contest. The main thing is to do the main work on retouching, and the rest is optional.

First of all, we clear the background from unnecessary elements. We work with plastic, if necessary. Retouching of skin and clothes can be done using the frequency decomposition method. You can easily find a description of this process on our website. We work on the volume using the Dodge and Burn method.

Now we apply textures, which will significantly diversify the image. Textures are great for creating mood. They can also add a little color and change the overall understanding of the subject of the picture. When adding textures, it is important to understand why you are adding them and observe the measure, otherwise you can overdo it.

In our example, some scratches have been added. The mask had to be removed from the model and close background elements.

Now you can finish processing, although the experiments can be endless.

Open the photo in Camera RAW. Lighten the shadows to +70 and raise the exposure a little. In the Detail tab, turn off the sharpness adjustment so that the sharpness does not focus twice and does not spoil the picture. I do it myself at the end in those areas where it is necessary. I use russified Photoshop, therefore the description is appropriate.

Open the file in Photoshop and first of all remove unnecessary elements in the frame in the corners. Select what needs to be removed using the Lasso tool, then go:
Edit> Fill> Content-Aware.
The program changes this fragment and even draws the direction of the stripes on the fabric.

The next step is darkening the corners and vignetting. I do the shading zone myself to control the areas where I need it. This can be useful if, for example, we have a bright sky and light falls from some side, and we do not need to darken this corner so as not to obstruct the light. I use the Straight Lasso tool and give it an edge feather 200-300, depending on the size of the photo. Next, based on the selection, create a new Curves adjustment layer and darken it as much as I need it (the mask in this curve needs to be inverted with Ctrl + I so that it darkens the required area).

The next adjustment layer is Gradient Map. Here we set the lights to orange and the shadows to purple. The blending mode of this layer is Soft Light with an opacity of 35%.

Next, create a Curves Adjustment Layer. In RGB, we raise the black point, in the blue channel, we tint the light to warm, the shadow to cold.

Make a highlight using a Gradient adjustment layer.
Set the Radial style to orange. Fill in the corner of our picture where the light comes from. Blending mode Screen, opacity 40%.

Merge all layers into one Shift + Ctrl + Alt + E and set the blending mode to Screen, layer opacity 30%, then merge the layers again and set the blending mode to Soft light, layer opacity 40%.
Now the photo is ready, it remains to finalize the details as desired. Brighten eyes, lips, draw hair. I also applied a texture overlay with Soft Light Blending Mode. If necessary, we work with leather, but in children's portraits there is rarely such a need.
Here's what happened as a result. The photo has become brighter, juicier, with interesting lighting that sets the atmosphere.
