Appearance, ergonomics and control

The Sony α7 III is a fairly compact camera. On the one hand, this is a plus, but it can also cause inconvenience. In my, female hand, it is quite comfortable, but I suppose that for male photographers the space between the grip for the right hand and the lens may seem insufficient - the knuckles will rest against the lens. It should be noted that an additional grip extension is provided for the camera, which can be purchased for more comfortable work, but I did not have the opportunity to test it in practice.

The camera itself is relatively light (650 grams with battery and memory card), but when used with the Planar T * FE 50mm f / 1.4 lens, which I used the most during testing, there is an imbalance - the optics seem too heavy for this camera. ... This nuance, however, can be corrected by purchasing an additional battery pack.

In terms of control, the Sony α7 III does not show anything fundamentally new - both design and controls have passed to it from other cameras in the family. In particular, from the model.

The front panel contains a bayonet mount, a lens release button, a selector dial on the grip handle, an IR transmitter for a wireless remote control and an autofocus lamp.

On the right side is the memory card compartment, which opens with a small lever. The top slot is for Memory Stick and SD cards, the bottom one is for SD only (the bottom one is marked as the first slot). Also here is the NFC contact pad.

All interfaces are concentrated on the left side, divided into three groups, each of which is covered with a plastic cover. The first contains a sync connector for an external flash and a mini-jack for a microphone. In the second - a mini-jack for headphones and microHDMI. In the third - USB Type-C (USB 3.0 standard) and microUSB. Both can be used to charge the camera, as well as to transfer files to a computer.

The top panel contains a speaker, a stereo microphone, a universal hot shoe interface and a group of controls concentrated on the right side: a classic mode selector, an exposure compensation wheel, a shutter release button with a power switch and two programmable keys.

Rear panel - LCD display with slide-out and tilt-out mechanism, but not 180-degree rotation. Above it is an electronic viewfinder eyepiece with a diopter adjustment wheel and a proximity sensor. All other controls are also located here: the third programmable key, the main menu button, the video recording start button, forced activation of autofocus / zoom in while viewing, exposure lock / zoom out while viewing, the second selector dial, joystick, navigation ring with four beams », Responsive to pressing, and a central confirmation button, a function key (by default, it brings up the quick menu) and keys for viewing and deleting images. The latter is also programmable.

The bottom contains only the battery compartment and the tripod socket. They are spaced far enough apart for the photographer to have access to the battery, even when shooting with a tripod.

My subjective experience with the Sony α7 III is mixed. From a utilitarian point of view, everything seems to be in order, but the expected level of comfort from the camera is not enough to work with it. For example, the exposure compensation dial is very tight here, as is the mode dial. The selector discs are quite normal. There are also questions about the keys - for example, the menu button is located too close to the viewfinder, it is inconvenient to press it.

The camera menu is very extensive - Sony α7 III is designed for serious and thoughtful work and therefore has many functions that are not obvious to the average amateur, but important for professionals. How conveniently the menu is organized is largely a matter of individual perception and habit. For example, in this regard, I am more impressed by the organization of the menu in the new Nikon Z7 - the functions are divided into sections more logically, you can find the desired parameter faster. In any case, after a few days of working with the α7 III, you also get used to its menu, and the most requested options are easily found. It is also worth noting that the camera allows the user to flexibly customize the control for himself by setting the necessary functions to the desired buttons. Moreover, you can assign different functions to the same button in the photo, video and frame viewing modes - this is very convenient.

Although the Sony α7 III's display is touch-sensitive, it cannot be used when navigating through the menus; you can only navigate between items using the controls.

The quick menu is invoked by the Fn button on the front panel. In it, of course, the user can add any functions he most demanded, but only 12 - in my opinion, this is not enough for such a camera.

Display and viewfinder

The LCD display with a diagonal of 3 inches and a resolution of 921 600 pixels is no longer very impressive by modern standards. This is just one of the fruits of the compromise that we talked about at the beginning. At the same time, the display is equipped with a touch-sensitive coating - this is an advance in relation to the previous model, the Sony α7 II. It is very convenient that the display can work in touchpad mode: when you frame the frame with the help of the viewfinder, you can nevertheless set the focus point by touching the formally turned off display.

The viewfinder here is also simplified compared to what we saw in the Sony α9 or α7R III: OLED, with a resolution of 2,359,296 pixels (versus 3.7 million pixels on the aforementioned brothers in the family or the direct competitor Nikon Z6). It uses new optics, which makes the experience noticeably different compared to the α7 II. But in any case, I admit that working with this viewfinder did not give me pleasure, and I only resorted to it in the bright sun, when pointing on the LCD screen became clearly uncomfortable.

Sensor, continuous shooting and autofocus

By far the biggest innovation of the Sony α7 III over its predecessor is the sensor. The resolution has hardly changed at 24 effective megapixels. But that shouldn't be misleading - the sensor is freshly designed, backlit, and great at high ISO performance. This is most likely a "stripped down" version of the sensor used in the α9 reportage camera. The BIONZ X processor works with this sensor, which, in turn, means a significant acceleration of data processing and an increase in the quality of this very processing.

The updated sensor works in tandem with a new "LSI" interface (mainly an additional processor) to shoot at up to 10 frames per second with one-shot AF and AE, but without displaying images in Live View mode, or up to 8 frames per second with the current image displayed ... This is a very serious level and is backed up by a very decent clipboard. The camera failed to achieve the stated burst length (up to 40 frames with uncompressed RAW), but 32 frames in RAW + JPEG format is also a very decent level. In JPEG format, burst length can be up to 85-87 shots. Shooting was carried out on a SanDisk Extreme Pro microSDXC UHS-II memory card.

The new camera borrows the impressive focusing system again from Sony α9: 693 phase sensors accompany 425 contrast sensors. Provides coverage of 93% of the frame.

The user has the opportunity to adjust autofocus in the most flexible way, so that, depending on the specifics of his work, each photographer can get the perfect result. For photographers working with manual focus, there are also convenient functions: a focusing magnifier and focus peaking (highlighting an area in the focus area with a selected color).

Portrait is the main genre in which I work, and the portrait in the open air with an open aperture I shoot most often, and this is exactly the situation when focusing is critically important. Every portrait photographer knows the feeling of disappointment when a shot that is successful in all respects has to be discarded due to the fact that the focus has "gone" a little in the wrong direction - on a lock of hair or the bridge of the nose. Constantly focusing carefully on the eyes is a habit, but the new Sony camera promises to save us a lot of work. How well does the eye AF system work? I decided to test this on the most complex model. Young children are difficult to get to pose, they are constantly on the move, and attempts to manually select a focus point here obviously fail. This is the perfect situation to test how the new autofocus works on the camera. And - it works well:

What this is connected with is not clear. In general, despite a number of mistakes, autofocus left a very pleasant impression. This camera really makes it possible to shoot dynamics, take live reportage photos, without wasting time on self-focusing, because of which the right moment is often missed. The chances of you getting a well-focused shot is very high.

For comparison, I took a number of shots with manual focus point selection. Here, too, everything worked perfectly, the camera instantly "clings" to the eyes in the specified place.

So, in daylight, autofocus is fast and accurate, but what can we expect when the lighting conditions leave a lot to be desired?

Here, too, everything is in order. The camera focuses very well in dim light, including when there are bright, distracting light sources in the frame. The percentage of focus misses, according to my observations, is not higher than in daylight. Autofocus is claimed to remain effective down to -3 EV. I can only confirm the words of the manufacturer.

Here I would also like to note one more interesting "feature" of the camera called "face registration" and "priority of registered faces". Its essence lies in the fact that we can take a picture of a certain person and add his portrait to the device's memory, so that then, when autofocusing on a group of people, the camera itself selects the desired character and focuses on him. This can be useful when shooting events where it is important to focus on specific people. For example, when photographing a wedding, we can register portraits of the bride and groom in the camera's memory, so that when filming them with guests, we can be sure that the main characters of the scene will be the newlyweds.

Professional DSLRs were once divided into two conditional segments - reportage and studio. The older models of "system" cameras in Alpha Sony decided to split in exactly the same way. In many ways, they are similar, they differ significantly in performance and quality of shooting.

The elaboration of all the nuances of the scene in the picture should be provided by a high-resolution sensor, from the surface of which a low-frequency filter, smoothing the image, has been removed. In addition, a new dual-core Bionz X processor is working on improving detail, noise suppression and color reproduction. It is equipped with multi-zone sharpening and diffraction reduction algorithms. Obviously, landscape photographers who are more likely to use small apertures (where diffraction is negatively affected) to maximize depth of field will appreciate this software tool.

Unlike the A7, the A7R is fully "clad" in magnesium armor. In both cameras, the responsiveness required by demanding photographers is provided due to the ability to quickly access all the most important shooting settings using hardware - buttons, wheels, levers placed on the body. Photographically, the QX1 fully reproduces the characteristics and functionality of the Sony A5000. They even managed to provide a place for a lift-up flash with a guide number 4. The very idea of ​​photographic adapters for phones is great, and there may well be a future for such devices - at least in the amateur segment. However, in this particular case, the final implementation plays an important role. With the "compact" QX models, in particular, there have been problems with responsiveness to user input.

The first was the A900, launched four years ago. Both cameras have the same 35mm sensor and essentially the same 24MP resolution. But these cameras also have a lot of differences. The A900 is a traditional DSLR without video or Live View. But the new A99 has a beautiful Sony SLT design, combined with the latest technology.

Like previous SLT cameras, the A99 uses a fixed translucent mirror. It allows most of the light to pass into the main sensor for full-time Live View. At the same time, the rest of the light is reflected upward towards the traditional detection phase of the AF system, which is typical for SLT models. This makes it possible to enjoy fast and confident continuous autofocus during Live View. Even the most advanced DSLRs struggle to achieve this achievement. The shutter can operate on the principle of an electronic front curtain, starting the exposure without any delay immediately the moment the shutter button is pressed. The viewfinder has a huge resolution of 2.36 million pixels by modern standards, an x0.71 magnification and 100% coverage of the frame area.

The camera is equipped with a Wi-Fi interface that allows you to remotely control the camera and quickly share pictures with mobile devices. It's not just that I dwelt in detail on the description of the main characteristics of the previous model. Within the family, the "sevens" practically do not differ in a number of properties, and their bodies are similar as two drops of water. The whole difference is hidden inside. For example, Sony Alpha A7R (full name Sony Alpha ILCE-7R) has not 24MP, but 36MP 24x36 mm matrix. Moreover, the matrix is ​​devoid of a low-frequency optical filter to provide even greater image detail.

A low-frequency optical filter (in English documentation it is also called OLPF) is used in modern matrices to artificially reduce the sharpness of the image. It is necessary to guarantee to avoid the appearance of the so-called moiré pattern - distortions caused by the imposition of regular textures in the subject of the image on the matrix pixel grid. But when using a 36-megapixel sensor, such distortions can be obtained only in very rare cases. But the gain in detail when the low-pass filter is abandoned is significant.

Sony Alpha A7R is the perfect tool for landscape photography enthusiasts, as well as for portrait, studio, and product photography. It will also appeal to those who make money on photo stocks, where higher-resolution images can bring more income. In this camera, everything is done for the sake of maximum detail in images. The manufacturer had to abandon the use of phase sensors on the matrix, and due to the large volume of files, the rate of fire slightly decreased from 5 to 4 frames / s relative to the Sony Alpha A7. It also uses a classic shutter without an "electronic front curtain" (it is noisier and formally has a longer response delay, although in practice this is not felt).

The large pixel Sony Alpha A7S can capture more photons of light, which means that the noise level when shooting at high ISO will be lower. The same is the case with dynamic range: when shooting high-contrast scenes, details in shadows and details in highlights will be better worked out. According to the results of instrumental tests, the Sony Alpha A7 matrix takes the first place among all modern cameras. This sensor model is no longer used in any other camera.

Until now, we have only talked about the photo capabilities of cameras, but all cameras of the modern Alpha family can shoot high-quality Full HD video. However, even against the background of its successful brothers in video shooting, the Sony A7S stands apart. Firstly, this camera is able to record video with very low noise at high ISO (thanks again to the unique matrix). Secondly, when shooting video, you can fully realize the widest dynamic range of the matrix. For this, a special S-log2 Gamma profile is provided. This is Sony's color correction technology that provides smooth tones, reduces overexposed and underexposed areas, and increases the dynamic range up to 1300%! However, without color correction at the post-processing stage (processing the captured video on a computer), the image captured using S-log2 will look low-contrast.

Video recording to a memory card is possible in Full HD resolution with a frequency of up to 50/60 frames / s (for HD, the frequency can be increased to 100/120 frames / s) and a bit rate of up to 50 Mbps. By using an external recorder connected to the camera's HDMI output, 4K video can also be recorded. The camera outputs an uncompressed video stream with a resolution of 3840 x 2160. Each frame of such a video is an 8-megapixel photo!

The Sony A7S uses the Full Pixel Readout technology, which allows you to read data from the matrix in its entirety during video recording and immediately compress it to the desired resolution using a powerful processor. In other cameras and even camcorders, information is most often used to read information from individual pixels, skipping entire rows and columns of light-sensitive elements. Full Pixel Readout allows you to get a better picture, free from distortions and artifacts. Another feature of the Sony A7S sensor is the ability to shoot with a completely silent shutter release.
