But now knowledge has been won. This means that all these actions have been brought to a positive result. Then in the field of knowledge everything akin to her is attainable, nothing alien to her. The rapprochement of the new, higher knowledge with the previously known is possible and necessary. That which retains the force of persuasiveness in the latter, in spite of the achievement of new knowledge, which is at the highest level, is immediately combined with it into a single system of knowledge. The same knowledge of the previous stages, which at the moment are late, that is, no longer suitable, are doomed to perish. Such is the intermediate situation between the conquest of victory and its future educational action.

Six in the beginning

Come closer to the one who owns the truth.
There will be no abuse.
It is full of truth, like a full jug.

The situation is conducive to establishing a connection with the spirits. Approaching unselfishly, you will gain benefits for yourself. It is still just beginning.

The most distant from the winner and at the same time the most malleable circle of subordinates is deprived of the opportunity to act independently. He most intensely seeks to get closer to the winner, because in him one can especially feel the distance from the winner, who (taking into account the previous commentary) appears here as the bearer of new, true knowledge: as “the owner of truth”. Relations here, at the beginning of the rapprochement, are still extremely simple, devoid of pretentiousness and artificiality. Therefore, the "possessor of truth" is full of it, like a simple artless earthen jug is full of water. It is not his appearance that matters, but his content. Everyone who approaches him, even acting for himself, still does what the situation requires. Therefore, coming to him unconditionally, to the end, he creates happiness not only for himself, but also for others. Passively preserving his knowledge, he is included with him in the entire system of the newly conquered level of world outlook and forms for the latter, as it were, a border that shapes it. This is the useful action of simple human reason, common sense, which is replaced by other types of cognition at further stages.

Approach your goal from the inside.

The path from the inner to the outer world is open. Don't lose a sense of inner connection with your goal.

The approximation that is conceived here is not an external, not purely spatial proximity, but a convergence in essence, for which only internal consonance is decisive. Therefore, in the process of this situation, first of all, its rhythm and consonance of this rhythm are taken into account. We have already seen more than once that the process expressed in one or another hexagram is the rhythm of two waves, in which the second and fifth positions express the highest points of development of each wave. Therefore, there is such an internal affinity between them. Here it is still supported by the opposition of the forces of Light (5) and Darkness (2), and, consequently, by their mutual attraction. With all this, here both of these forces are taking their positions normally.

Therefore, it is between them, perhaps, the most correct, most fruitful rapprochement. If it contains the whole essence of this hexagram, then in this line it is expressed most of all in essence only in concepts, while its figurative development in representations will be shown in the text of the fifth line. It also notes that moment in cognition, which is characterized by passion, gravitation for cognition, but also the full ability to realize this gravitation. It is, and nothing prevents it. The latter is even expressed purely graphically: after all, between the second trait (the subject of desire) and the fifth (the object of desire) there are no strong traits that can resist. However, at this stage, only the approximation is meant, but not yet the achievement of the object of desire. And if for the fifth position, as we will see, complete and perfect knowledge will be characteristic, then for the given one - only the striving for it and the possession of it is not real, but only ideally. The latter, nevertheless, is possible, because the line between the inner and the outer is here destroyed by the force of their harmony and mutual attraction.

Six third

You get closer to the goal, but it is not the same.

The approach is not over yet. If this is a person, leave him alone, if this is an ideal, then not the one that you need.

The striving for the object - the highest ideal - remains here, but more favorable conditions have already passed. We are talking here about the latecomers, which are mentioned in the text of the hexagram itself. The striving itself is a force, and the presence of force necessarily causes confrontation. So the subject here confronts all the negative forces face to face, which in the commentary literature are sometimes considered as infernal. This is also expressed in the fact that there is only a striving for the ideal with the complete impossibility of its implementation, because the qualities that had such a beneficial effect on the previous stage: consonance, normality, concentration, are completely absent here. The latter is possible only on the second and fifth (central in the trigram) steps, the first and the second are absent in this position: both the third and sixth positions are occupied by homogeneous and therefore inconsistent forces, and the third, odd position is occupied by a non-normative weak line.

External approach to the goal.
Fortitude is for happiness. The path is open.

Your goal is now discernible. You have shown your best side and the path is open. Keep going in the same direction.

After the past crisis, the approach is again possible, but the inner affinity is no longer recoverable. Time has already passed for him. And the only thing that is possible here is external, spatial proximity, which in these conditions is also significant. - If it was about the internal affinity of concepts, now it is about the proximity of their comparison. In this case, of course, the faces of the compared concepts separate them, just as they connect them, i.e. "Bring together". All that is needed for success here is the persistence of maintaining such a status quo. The oldest commentary tradition considers this proximity to be closeness to the ruler of his advisers, between whom it can be maintained not by virtue of internal consonance, but only by virtue of the subordination of the advisers to the supreme power.

Nine fifth

Explicit approximation.
The king should place beaters only from three sides.
And let go of the game that goes ahead.
Then there will be no prohibitions for the townspeople, and there will be Happiness.

In achieving your goal, be like a king who goes hunting. Don't block all escape routes. Then the prey will be that which will come to you of its own accord. You don't need to bind people with prohibitions to obey you. The path is open (happiness).

If in the previous approximation it was considered from the side of those who are approaching, now it is considered from the side of the one to whom they are approaching. This object of approach is expressed by a single light feature, to which, due to polarity, all others gravitate. Here, one quality of this object is enough, its explicitness, which imparts a shade of explicitness to the entire process of approximation. However, this is not a passive admission of a formless and free approach, but a completely definite formulation of the freedom of those approaching. It is expressed in images borrowed from the rites of ancient China. As one of the significant commentators, the Song Cheng I-chuano, points out, already during the Chou dynasty there was a cult rite of royal hunting, in which beaters were placed only on three sides of the field. The fourth side was open, and the game that fled from the hunting king could freely escape death. Thus, only those animals were killed that went directly to the hunter, who “did not need life” and they “gave it to him themselves”. It was believed that such an action by the king is a powerful prototype for the entire population, which turns out to be superfluous any prohibitions. This is how this freedom is expressed, nevertheless framed by the framework of necessity.
