The first "Triumph" took place in the hall of the Moscow House of Cinema on January 27, 2001. “Jazz is for everyone,

he is not elitist or locked up in clubs. Come on, listen to your Snoop Doggy Dogg, Pearl Jam and Gareth Brooks, but add a little Ellington, Basie and Coltrane to them, ”the musician urges.

"Triumph of Jazz" began with "Independent Jazz Festivals" by Igor Butman in 1997 and 1998 at the Central House of Artists and the Concert Hall. PI Tchaikovsky, when the triumph of jazz on Russian concert venues was not even possible to think about. Then these concerts became a real sensation, for the first time bringing together Russian and American jazzmen of the highest level on one stage.

Today "Triumph of Jazz" is the brightest performances at the Moscow International House of Music and the Igor Butman Club, concerts in St. Petersburg and a list of participating names that any European jazz producer will envy. Over the past 17 years, the greatest McCoy Tyner, Lee Konitz, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dave Holland, Gary Burton, Ahmad Jamal and many other stars have performed for the first time in Russia at the Triumph of Jazz. And since 2015, within the framework of the main program "Triumph", the "Children's Triumph of Jazz" has been held - the festival purposefully brings up a competent and enthusiastic spectator.

Musicians from the USA and South Korea are setting the tone this season. The headliner of the festival is a quartet of five-time Grammy laureate, outstanding bassist Christian McBride. A versatile soldier and jack of all trades, he has achieved recognition as an instrumentalist, composer and arranger in a wide variety of genres: jazz, R&B, rock, hip-hop and even classical. His bass accompanied such voices as the opera legend Kathleen Battle, Sting and Larisa Dolina, and on the screensaver on his Twitter and Facebook Christian with deserved pride put joint photos with the "godfather" of soul James Brown. Last visit to Moscow, McBride performed a hurricane swing at the head of a piano trio a la Ray Brown, and this time he will present his new quartet without a pianist with two brass instruments - in this format Ornette Coleman created his avant-garde free jazz in the 50s - 60s years, when this kind of music was called New Thing, "new thing." McBride christened his band New Jawn with some irony, using a slang word from his native Philadelphia that stands for any thing, person or place.

Another instrumental quartet will be presented by saxophonist Chris Potter, a no less stellar contemporaries of McBride, who has also repeatedly topped the ratings of readers and critics of the reputable Downbeat magazine, but is more concentrated on his own projects and the search for his unique composer's voice, style and place in history. In the Moscow estate of Tsaritsyno, together with Joshua Redman, he performed almost neoclassical arrangements in a group of four saxophones, in other works he dabbled in compositions with electric guitars and synthesizers, engaged the string sections and has already released two recordings on the prestigious European label ECM. The current quartet can be considered a return to chamber, but more energetic acoustic sound, following the success of The Sirens concept album.

The Moscow Jazz Orchestra will perform twice with special foreign guests. Vocalist Yoon Sung Na, born in South Korea and pursuing her musical education in France, is striking in her breadth of range, both technical, from fragile almost whispering to operatic techniques, and genre, from folk rock to Metallica and Tom Waits - and all this. jazz. Pianist and composer John Beasley earned a Grammy nomination for his highly modernist (with echoes of trip-hop, drum'n'bass and neosoul) big band arrangements of Thelonious Monk melodies, who at the dawn of bebop made a significant contribution to the creation of the language of jazz modern ... New York trumpet player Mike Rodriguez will perform with drummer Oleg Butman's trio, while vocalist Alina Rostotskaya and her ensemble JazzMobile will represent the new generation of Moscow jazz.
