Successful career: how to make it? Career success. Successful career of a woman

Hello, friends!

It is with great pleasure that I present to your attention an exclusive interview - specially for our project "Career for Your Soul".

So, Inna Kuznetsova - Chief Commercial Officer, CEVA Logistics, author of a career bestseller "Up! A Practical Approach to Career Growth ”.

Recommend to join book page on Facebook.

- Inna, in your opinion, can everyone make a successful career in life? What does it depend on?

- First of all, it is worth defining what we mean by career and how success is defined.

The criteria for a successful career are different for each person. For some, this is growth in the management of an organization, for others - an expert and professional ladder.

For the largest group of people, work is simply making money so that there is time and opportunity to engage in family, hobby or charity work.

In the first case, success is determined by the level to which you want to rise, in the second - recognition of peers, publications, the opportunity to be the best in your field.

If we talk about growth in management, then the criteria for a successful career are very subjective: someone sets himself the task of becoming the CEO of a global company, someone is happy as a head of a department.

It would be naive to say that anyone can reach an arbitrarily high level in the company. First of all, because one of the conditions for a successful career is that each level requires a lot of competition, time, effort and building relationships with people, often - depending on the organization - in a politically charged climate.

Not everyone is able or willing to devote the necessary amount of effort to work, constantly learn new things, take a firm stand on unpopular issues, or make decisions in the face of a lack of data.

Moreover, that industry or area may require relocation.

For example, most global companies are headquartered in America or several Western European countries, opening only sales and support offices in the rest. This means that access to more serious decisions - product strategy, financing, mergers and acquisitions - requires a change of residence.

But apparently, for everyone who has chosen this path, there is the optimal level that they can reach while continuing to enjoy their work.

And with competent career planning, constant professional development, building a good network of contacts, this level can be maximized in each individual case.

- What are the main components of success in such an area of life as "work and career" (that is, what is needed in order to achieve success in a career)? And what, according to your observations and experience, usually hinders this?

- First of all, it seems to me, this is the need to understand what kind of work gives you pleasure and professional pride: not who you want to become, but who you want to be.

What makes a successful career: 3 important ingredients

1. To size new salary and the office you will quickly get used to, but what you have to do in this place will delight or disappoint you for more than one year. This is not easy to understand without trying different directions, without going through several ups and downs, so I guess natural curiosity and the ability to regularly leave your own comfort zone- this is one of the important components.

I know quite a few people who have tried to lead others - and who hated the job because they only got real satisfaction from writing good code or making a big deal. Some found the courage to admit this and return to their field, others tried to learn new things, others remained to do the hated business because of more high salary and, ultimately, stopped in professional growth.

2. The second and most important of these is high quality bar in what you do... This is the main criterion for achieving a successful career. Without outstanding results you cannot move on. Competition for positions at the next level will only increase as career growth... So if you work in a meritocratic environment, not nepotism and a politically charged environment, then the results will be one of the first selection criteria.

3. The third, especially important for a career in management, is to learn to work with other people: subordinates, colleagues, managers, investors, customers, partners. Not all of them will turn out to be pleasant or on your side.

The ability to pursue your own line and policy, without destroying the desire to work with you in the future, evoke the best in others, provide positive motivation, but at the same time not be afraid to take a tough stance, turns out to be critical. Good leaders know how to build friendly and effective teams, do not leave ruin after themselves, move to another place, help people in their professional growth and, at the same time, learn from them.

- What kind important qualities for a successful career and competence would you recommend to develop our readers - to achieve career heights? How to improve yourself?

- Each person has their own problem areas and factors that hinder growth. It would be a mistake to recommend the same thing to people with different backgrounds and different goals. The most productive way to grow is either by working with a mentor, getting regular feedback and trying to strengthen the right sides by reading relevant literature and practice.

Our first promotion, as a rule, is determined primarily by professional results and what is called executive presence - the ability to hold on, command respect from others, make serious judgments, listen to others. With the progress upward, in addition to these qualities, additional requirements appear.

First of all, it is the ability to motivate people and build stable, result-oriented, viable teams; understand and implement changes in strategy; work with other departments and act in the best interests of the organization as a whole.

Access to senior management requires, in addition to all the previous skills, the ability to be tough and not be afraid of unpopular decisions if they are dictated by the interests of shareholders, the ability to take calculated risks and, to a certain extent, be a “troublemaker” without fear of established authorities, violation of the status quo and search unusual way.

Without knowing a specific person, it is difficult to say which of this list will cause him difficulties. The best way to follow this route is to find your mentors and mentors, people who, within the framework of a more formally structured relationship, or from time to time, will prompt you what you should work on.

If you are fortunate enough to be in a company that pays attention to professional development, then for sure it has a system of regular reviews and access to various resources, be it training or a mentoring program. If not, then you should look for such people yourself, read books or articles on those areas that regularly pop up in reviews, be it negativism or emotional intelligence.

It may sound daunting, however, a career is a marathon, not a sprint. We have several decades to choose our path, make our share of mistakes and develop the right qualities. The only loser is the one who initially abandons the idea of choosing a job that he will love.

Ross Perot: plan for decades

Ross Perot is a successful American businessman. In 1984, he sold his company for $ 2.4 billion. Since then, Perot has been involved in investments, he has a lot of different businesses and non-profit projects. Perot also writes books on motivation, business and economics, thereby passing on his knowledge to millions of readers.
In 2006, he spoke to students at Southern Methodist University. In his speech, Ross Perot said: “Your generation has significantly more time to plan its future. Be prepared for the fact that at 80 and 90 years old you will work. But before this future comes, you must travel, discover the world, get to know other peoples and nationalities. Organize a little adventure for yourself, this is how you can discover your true passions and desires. I am sure that then you will be rewarded for all your efforts. "
But the most the main idea which makes you wonder is that you should plan your life. Of course, it is not realistic to calculate everything before the day, because there are situations that simply cannot be modeled in advance, but you must have a clear understanding of what you want, where you are moving and what all this is for. Have a small life plan in which there must be fulcrum points - where do you want to study, what to do, where to live, what kind of family to have, which countries to visit, etc.

Ted Turner: Work hard, but don't forget about advertising

Ted Turner is the founder of the world famous CNN. Now 74 years old, Ted has done a lot in his life. Particularly noteworthy is the charity he is engaged in. In 1997, he made a donation of $ 1 billion to the UN. Incredible? This is how it happens. But now I would not like to focus on this. Ted Turner is a very wise person, and when asked how he achieved success, the answer is almost always the same - "Go to bed early, also wake up early, work tirelessly and do not forget about advertising." That's the whole secret. As they say, all ingenious is simple.
At 74, Turner does not stop working, every day he works on something new, creates projects, develops an already working business. This commitment to life, work and development is the best motivation.

Reid Hoffman: be contradictory, only then you will be right

Reed Hoffman is a venture capitalist, one of the most successful businessmen in the world, and the co-founder of the LinkedIn business social networking site. Hoffman is a very empathetic tactician and knowledgeable investor. He was one of the first to see prospects in the creation of Mark Zuckerberg and invested in Facebook. If you study Reed's investment history in more detail, you can find in the list of more than a dozen successful, world-renowned companies that bring excellent profits.

But today we are interested not so much in the biography of Reed Hoffman, as in part of his speech from a speech to the students of the Berkeley School of Information.

“Your thinking should be creative and clear. Where can you find the best opportunity for yourself? Where do you think it is possible to change something and start a profitable business? In what area are you better oriented than others? Business success lies in the fact that you have to be contradictory, but at the same time, always prove to be right. The combination of these qualities will bring you incredible success. Obviously, the niche you occupy should be attractive and promising for you, but not at all of interest to competitors. In conditions when everyone says that this area is hopeless, that it is not worth developing it, you must prove your case and become the best. "

These are the teachings Hoffman gave to the young people, and they are 100% correct. It often happens that we are introduced to society, we start doing what is supposedly profitable, we do not pay attention to other areas of business. So it was with social media... Only not many people understood that on Vkontakte, Facebook, you can earn money. The first public pages with a profit-based view began to appear in 2007-08, but then very few people took seriously the possibility of such earnings. Now these communities are leaders, and those who were skeptics start everything from scratch and lag significantly behind. This is just one example, and there are thousands of them. Think with your own head, assess situations soberly, look ahead and be contradictory.

Carl Icahn: Think For Yourself

Just two words - "Think for yourself", and how much meaning is hidden in them. Speaking to students at the Drexel University Business School, Karl Icahn made a wonderful speech:
“When you graduate from the university, you will have two ways - to succumb to other people's views and thoughts, or to think independently and make responsible decisions. You must become a person who thinks with his own head. The whole world, large corporations and businesses, are waiting for such young professionals. You must be like leaders large companies who have their own opinion, their own vision of market development and go against the prevailing stereotypes.
Until the very end, stay open to new ideas, innovative proposals and promising opportunities. If you have a plan, then strictly follow it, go to the break to your goal. Do not worry, because this is the approach that is appreciated in business "

Steve Case: The people around you are very important

Steve Keyes is successful businessman and founder of AOL. His speech to the graduates of George Mason University was very entertaining, but one piece I liked the most:
“Whatever you do, whatever type of business you develop, success depends on the ability to find a common language with people. It is believed that the person with whom you do business is much more important than the case itself. Those who surround you every day, be it a girl, friends, colleagues, business partners, can significantly change the vector of your development and affect your overall success. When choosing a place of work, pay attention neither to the brand or history, but above all to who you will have to work with, who will influence your life on a daily basis ”

Jeri Young: Shocks shouldn't knock you down

Jeri Young is the founder of Yahoo! and he certainly knows that he does not need to succumb to difficulties. In his speech to alumni of the University of Hawaii, he noted that Yahoo! was created in a very difficult period. In the early 90s there were economic troubles, the world was changing, the views on business and life in general were changing. It was during this period that young Jeri and his university friend set up Yahoo!
Young himself notes that periods of crisis, and periods of all kinds of economic shocks, can be a springboard for young entrepreneurs. After all, large corporations during this period do not think about new beginnings, their main goal is to retain customers and not lose profits. This alignment of forces gives you the opportunity to start something interesting, while not having a lot of competition and unnecessary attention.

These thoughts are not from ordinary people, but from those who have achieved success, built companies with a worldwide reputation, made an undeniable contribution to the development of business, economy, and the whole world. It will not be enough to read their speeches, you need to analyze the words, and most importantly, learn and apply in practice. I am sure that each of you is able to achieve success, become a truly great businessman, and perhaps in a dozen years your quotes and a wise message addressed to all young entrepreneurs will flaunt on the pages of business forums and magazines.

There are many ways to make a career, but the surest of them is to decide on the method to achieve it.

Donald Trump

A successful career is a well-built career

Career (definition) is an employee's critically conscious personal judgments about his work future, as well as his expected ways of self-expression and, as a result, job satisfaction.

I would like to note right away that the ideal career formula is a myth. In each case, much will depend not only on individual abilities and needs, but also on the type of chosen field of activity.

For example, a competent specialist who is well versed in the intricacies of tax legislation can be quite satisfied with his position. He performs tasks to optimize relations with government bodies at different enterprises.

His professional growth can be accompanied by large-scale and complex issues that only he is able to solve quickly and efficiently. Respect and prosperity. A certain freedom in their own actions. The ability to make important decisions for yourself.

Lack of pressure from the authorities and planning activities in a convenient mode. In this case, a successful career of the "horizontal" type is quite possible and no advancement up the career ladder is required. Everything you need can be obtained by developing existing skills.

A career in trading is a completely different matter. It can hardly be called a successful process of developing skills in packaging products for the position of a seller. A career in a sales company will be much more interesting.

It makes sense here to learn by doing job responsibilities ordinary personnel, but this should be used only in order to more accurately understand the intricacies of the trading process, to get the opportunity to use the knowledge gained at a higher management position.

The correct definition of a professional career is half the battle

Career motivation should be understandable to the person who wants to get the result. Greater material reward should not always be put in the first place among the priorities. Sometimes you need to make a stop, raise your professional level, be trained in a specialized institution.

Career steps that jump too quickly can create gaps in the knowledge base. One-off ups and downs are not a reliable guarantee of future progress. Significant career achievements are obtained as a result of hard work.

In any case, the base should be a high professional level, regardless of what type of development is chosen, "horizontal" or "vertical". This is what will allow you to be confident in your own future, and not the presence of family ties or some imaginary symbol of a career that brings good luck.

Ability and desire to learn. Increasing the volume of knowledge and obtaining new skills, applying them in practice. Only this approach will allow you to get the desired result.

Friends, life is so developing that today, everywhere and in everything, a career is one of the most important components of a successful human life. Hence the questions about. Do you even know that there is such a science - careerism? Do the terms HRM, MBA, headhunting, resume tell you anything? If not, then let's figure it out.

You may not yet know how to build a successful career, or you may even think that a career is a luxury. I will try to dissuade you and show that a career is a means of achieving professional goals.

In the last century, this mysterious word "career" was clothed in a slightly different meaning. And in the XXI century it reached a fundamentally new level. Career today is, first of all, self-realization in professional activity... Personally, I can't even imagine that some company would publish vacancies, but at the same time did not promise career opportunities. Agree, it is stupid to go to work if in the future there will be no opportunity to become a leader. It is from all this that the word "careerist", so familiar to us, was born. Of course, for most of us, this word is negative. A person who is ready for anything to "fly up" the career ladder. But for those people who are engaged in staffing, such a characteristic is rather a positive quality.

A successful career today is not about being a professional in your field. This is even more. This is when you are the best. And in order to become the best, you need to have a lot of knowledge. It is on their basis that it will turn out to build a successful career, or to be more precise, then:

    Getting a second higher education

    High-quality preparation for the interview

    A well-formed resume

    HR terminology

Good informational awareness of the labor market

    Good educational potential

Of course, today there are a thousand and one relevant ways to build a career, and each of them is attractive in its own way. But it is worth considering one important point- your success as a specialist depends on your moral and business qualities. You must be able to set professional goals and achieve them with the help of competent self-organization.

I must say that no matter what organization you work in, but climbing the stairs career ladder Is a rather complicated process. And if you take into account high level competition, even more so. Our market is coming to world standards, and for this reason, careerism appears.

Careeristics Is a science that studies the phenomena of self-realization creativity personality, and how to use this potential

But this is a very meager definition of careerism. In fact, it consists of many components such as MBA, ERP, Curriculum Vitae, HR management, headhunting, assessment, coaching, personnel leasing, recruiting and recruiting agencies, resumes, interviews, back office, qualifications, front office. I have listed a lot, but, believe me, in fact, there are much more of these concepts. And the above is useful for those who are interested in.

Below I will discuss in detail some of these concepts.

MBA- if translated into Russian, then literally the following will turn out: “master of business administration (management). With the help of this program, people who have higher education can gain in-depth knowledge of business administration. The purpose of this program is to prepare highly qualified specialists for the future leaders top echelon... During the course of the program, students accumulate both theoretical and practical experience in the field of management.

Personnel leasing Is a personnel management strategy in which part of the employees with whom they are officially employment contracts, are transferred for a predetermined period at the disposal of another borrowing company. In another firm, these employees also perform their assigned duties. At the same time, the company that has transferred its employees to "lease" retains everything with them. labor Relations according to the contract.

CV (CurriculumVitae)- this is detailed description all the possibilities of the author. However, keep in mind that CV and resume are two different things. The resume is just a small part of the author's detailed biography. And CV is a biography. It is used in cases when, for example, you have already talked beforehand on the phone with a potential employer, and he asked you to come to him and tell him in more detail about yourself. Well, or send by mail a more detailed version of your biography description.

Headhunting Is a search for an employee with exceptional qualities for a key position. In this case, a special search technology is used to search for the necessary frames. In some cases, methods are used not to search, but to entice an already defined specialist from another company. And sometimes it happens that the client wants a rare specialist to be found. This is again our case. In general, headhunting is the most profitable business in the recruiting business.

The HR department is the personnel department of the company, whose employees are engaged in the selection and staffing of the personnel

That's the way it is, friends. Good luck with successful construction your own career!
