How to understand what is in demand. Step-by-step instructions on how to conduct a demand analysis. What is required from an entrepreneur for his business to become in demand

It is necessary for all companies to analyze the demand for products, because the research process may reveal products that have the highest need among buyers, key groups of products that bring the maximum benefit, and the manufacturer can also monitor the dynamics of the interests of needs.

The complexity of the analysis lies in the fact that it is necessary to see not only an increase in demand, but also its change, a development trend under the influence of various factors.

Key influencers

In determining the needs of buyers and their decision to purchase a product, the main factors affecting demand can be distinguished:

  • product quality;
  • market saturation;
  • product price;
  • income of buyers and their changes;
  • prices for related goods;
  • consumer preferences;
  • consumer expectations and so on.

The list of these factors, one way or another, affects the decision of consumers to purchase a product. The only tool that can balance supply and demand is price. Its choice is influenced by the factor of elasticity.

Demand research involves a comprehensive study, which includes not only the analysis of supply and demand, but also prices and its changes. These three elements are in constant relationship with each other.

Definition of elasticity and its determinants

Analysis of supply and demand is not complete without identifying elasticity:

  • If the value of the coefficient of elasticity is higher than one, then the demand is elastic;
  • If the value of the coefficient of elasticity is less than one, then it is inelastic;
  • If it is equal to zero, then it is absolutely inelastic, which means that no matter how the price changes, the demand for these changes will not react in any way;
  • With elasticity equal to one, the rate of increase in demand is equal to the rate of decrease in price.

There is such a concept as the determinants of the elasticity of demand, which help to understand the relationship with some elements and to carry out analysis. They are presented in the table:

Risk of unclaimed products

Market demand analysis is directly related to the risk assessment of products that may not be in demand. This occurs when the consumer does not buy any product and it remains unrealized. To avoid such a risk, each enterprise should consider the possible causes (factors that may influence) and try to minimize losses. As for the reasons, they can be external and internal.

External reasons:

  • Demographic;
  • Political;
  • Socio-economic;
  • Insolvent condition of buyers.

The risk related to unclaimed goods is divided into several groups:

  • surmountable,
  • irresistible.

The risk can be detected at different stages... If it is detected at the pre-production stage, then a greater effect should be expected from its prevention, since in this case only the initial costs will be included in the economic damage.

As for the other two stages (production and post-production), the risk found in these phases will undermine financial condition organizations or enterprises (to the aforementioned expenses will be added and additional ones related to the preparation, development, production and sale of goods).

Much depends on how timely the risk was detected:

  • The first period: the product can not be produced, but replaced by another;
  • Second period: the product can be slightly changed by adding something new to it;
  • The third period: there is hardly anything that can be done here, since the product has entered the market.

Analysis of consumer demand helps to identify several categories of goods:

  • A product that promotes economic growth, makes a profit (it is called a "star");
  • "Cash cow" or a commodity that does not sufficiently contribute to the prosperity of the enterprise, but nevertheless is profitable;
  • “Difficult children” is the name for new products that require advertising and are not yet profitable;
  • "Dead weight" is a non-profitable commodity that is not a cause of economic growth, and it is not viable in itself, already based on its name.

Such a grouping and its analysis allows you to choose the right strategy that will allow you to fund "difficult children" and "cash cows" in order to make them "stars". The main thing is to take into account the stage at which he is in this moment:

  1. Zero stage: it is characterized by analysis and development new products, her original idea;
  2. The first stage is characterized by bringing the product to the market, its introduction, and it is here that its further success becomes clear;
  3. Second: the product is profitable, covers costs, but still requires implementation advertising campaigns and promotion;
  4. Third: the product is in demand, generates income, does not require large advertising costs;
  5. Fourth: a sharp decline, as the product simply becomes boring to consumers and does not satisfy the former need.

Researching demand, analyzing it in a timely manner, as well as identifying the factors influencing it, helps to understand and prevent its decline due to the introduction of a new or improvement of an existing process.

Runet marketers claim that the volume of goods purchased via the Internet is increasing significantly every year. The work of existing online stores and other trading platforms... More and more users are joining the opportunity to earn money through organization of new stores.

And this is quite natural, because over the past decade, Internet technologies have become closer and more accessible. Almost anyone in our country has the opportunity to go online and order what he likes there.

Many are too busy to go shopping - it is easier for them to buy something on the Internet, especially since it can often be done in a couple of clicks, without getting up and without letting go of a cup of coffee. In addition, an online purchase will be delivered to any convenient location - often free of charge. So is it worth wasting time on tiresome shopping if you can buy everything you need on the Internet?

For sellers, online trade in goods is also beneficial, because in this way they significantly save on rent. This is why the number of online stores is constantly increasing.

Where did you buy the best selling products on the Internet in 2019?

Most often, users make purchases through online stores. These include giants such as AliExpress and Amazon, as well as smaller and medium-sized online stores with a narrower focus.

Significantly less often online purchases are made by:

  • on the online auctions;
  • through various web message boards (for example - Avito);
  • on other resources specializing in the sale of products or the provision of various services.

How to find out which products are best selling online

In fact, different services provide different data on the volume of online purchases, so it can be quite difficult to establish the truth. The market is constantly changing, and some segments of e-commerce are growing faster than others.

If you want to know how much a particular group of goods is in demand, you can check it using the Yandex Wordstat service. It does not show the number of purchases, but it clearly demonstrates the number of search queries, that is, the number potential buyers looking for this product on the web.

For example, on the query “Clothes Internet”, the service shows that more than 20 million people per month are looking for online stores, of which more than 1.3 million are looking specifically for online clothing stores.

But 25 thousand people are looking for air tickets online every month, and another 12 thousand want to buy cheap air tickets.

Only 11 thousand people are looking for laptops on the Internet, but given the fact that Yandex Wordstat gives out more than 400 thousand user requests for the request “buy a laptop”, many of them are likely to use the services of online stores

Another service that helps determine the demand for a product or product category is called Google Trends. If you enter a position you are interested in in the search bar, it will show graphs of the popularity of this query through Google search, as well as other statistics.

True, this service does not show the exact number of search queries on the topic, but only determines the popularity of the query on a scale from 0 to 100

You can clarify the request for your country and select a time period for analysis

You can also check the popularity by region or city here.

Google Trends also allows you to compare the popularity of two different queries.

With the help of Yandex Wordstat and Google Trends, you can determine which niche of e-commerce is the most in demand in your region, and, possibly, open your own profitable online business. Remember that the volume of online purchases is constantly growing, so even small shop may well bring a decent profit to its owner.

On the 10th place - large household appliances

Large household appliances were not bought so actively online in 2019, despite the lower prices offered here. As before, people are used to making large purchases in ordinary specialized markets. The main reason is the high cost of purchase and its size.

Buyers tend to buy expensive household appliances with clarification of all the nuances in detail, check the goods before buying for defects and completeness of the product. In addition, in the supermarket you can consult with competent staff, ask questions about the operation of the goods.

But still, for many it is still difficult to buy a thing on the Internet exactly in size and without trying it on. Many do not dare to buy, because they doubt that it will fit.

However, this problem can be solved. Most online stores do not require prepayment - if you don’t like a thing, you don’t have to take or pay for it. In addition, the buyer has the opportunity to see the reviews of the product left by other customers.

Software it is easier to buy than clothes, it does not need to be measured, it suits everyone. Usually, the purchase of licensed software is made by commercial organizations, government agencies, users who are worried about the safety of their information.

The most popular were:

  • operating system Windows;

  • office application packages Microsoft Office and etc.

5th place - product group for children

These products are more versatile, so it's much easier to buy them online. The choice of such goods is huge, the prices are reasonable. Children's products are structured, which makes them much easier to purchase.

On the 4th place - cosmetics and perfumery

The abundance of these products does not leave women indifferent. In addition, the cost on the Internet is often lower than in retail, and the choice is wider. Facilitates online shopping by being able to read product reviews and professional reviews.

Hi everyone! Today there will be a short but necessary article, especially for those who do not know this. Let's talk about how to determine the demand for goods or services on the Internet. Why am I writing it? So that you know how to estimate demand before you even start selling anything on the Internet. So, let's begin.

Probably everyone remembers that I often casually talked about such a service from Yandex as Wordstat? So, with the help of it, you can determine the demand, find out the number of requests on the Internet for your goods or services in the city you need or throughout the country. Below I will just tell you what this service is and how to use it.

What kind of service?

This is the statistics of queries in the Yandex search engine. The search engine collects monthly statistics for each entered word or phrase in the search results and shows it to you. But you can look at statistics not only for a month, but also for a longer time, in order to assess the seasonality of your product, whether it exists and how it manifests itself.

You can enter the product you need in Wordstat and see how many times a month it is requested in the Yandex search engine according to the localization parameters you selected. Below we will analyze everything in detail using the example of bags (just for example).

How to use?

1. Go to Yandex Wordstat.

2. Choose your city or country (if you sell all over the country).

3. Type your request into the line. In my case, this is a "bag" and immediately add the word "buy", because we are going to sell.

3. We see the number of requests per month with the phrase "Buy a bag" = 68 194 times. Also below there are requests with explanatory phrases, such as "Buy a bag in Moscow", "Buy a leather bag", etc. If you click on one of these phrases, for example "Buy a bag + in Moscow", then you will go to the list of queries, where you can find exactly "Buy a bag" and "Moscow". Also with a leather bag, by going to this request, you will only see requests for leather bags.

5. To see the seasonality of demand, then click on "Query History" right below the search bar and you will see a graph with baht.

What conclusion can be drawn?

According to our request, it can be seen that 68,000 people a month want to “buy a bag”, which means that the product is more than in demand for the Internet. For small towns, even an indicator of less than 1000 will be normal, depending on the niche. For example, we have about 1000 "buy a bag" requests per month in Omsk and sales are going on.

BUT! You have just looked at Yandex. And then there is Google. In Google, there is no such simple service for assessing demand and viewing the number of requests. Of course it is, but not so convenient (maybe I'll tell you later somehow). Therefore, if you saw the number of requests in Yandex Wordstat, then you can safely multiply by 1.5 or 2, and now you will have almost complete coverage of the desired phrase.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I would like to add a little. You can estimate through Wordstat not only the demand for goods and services on the Internet, but also in the real sector. After all, now almost any product is searched for on the Internet. For offline, this picture will not be entirely accurate, but in my opinion, the indicators can be considered minimal. Because if there are so many requests on the Internet, there are many times more of them offline.

I also want to say that Wordstat can be used not only to determine the demand for goods or services, but also to properly promote your site, or rather to collect keywords to promote them. But I'll tell you about this in one of the following articles, so subscribe to updates!

Best regards, Nikolay Schmidt

It would be wonderful if you looked into the crystal ball to see if your product would be a success after launch. In reality, things are not so simple, however, a few simple activities carried out before the launch of the product will give you a glimpse into the future and save or earn significant cash... Here are some ways to measure product success before launching to market.

1. Conduct product testing

You have probably already heard about this method, and this option of identifying consumer demand for the products you are interested in should not be overlooked. It is impossible to overestimate the benefits of testing. It goes without saying that the data obtained will not completely correspond to the valid ones, but at least you will know if there is any interest in your product.

2. Conducting surveys of potential buyers

Analyze customer reviews. Find out what kind of product they need, how they would like it to look and what features it has, you can also ask additional questions about the cost they are willing to pay for a similar product, etc. The more you learn about the needs of your customers, the better your product will be.

3. Find out if consumers are ready to purchase planned launch products now.

You can talk about your new ideas for a very long time, but this will not help to identify consumer interest. To begin with, offer customers, if they like the idea of a new product, reduce the cost of the product by 25% and the opportunity to purchase it right now. Look at the reaction, if this did not attract their attention, then later they will not buy this product.

4. Conduct a consumer market research

This procedure will take time, but will pay off later. Research the demand for your products and those of your competitors, then do a general survey of the market for similar products. This will help you to find out about the trends of this commodity market, do not repeat someone's already implemented ideas, and use the collected information to improve your products.

5. Don't be discouraged

A positive attitude and a firm intention allows you to achieve the set task with fewer losses and for a longer time. If you yourself do not like what you produce, why should others like it? So, it's better to come to good location spirit, which will affect what you do.

6. Put yourself in the shoes of the buyer

Instead of always striving to sell something, become a buyer yourself for the day. Look at your product from the perspective of a consumer, what attracts you to it and what, on the contrary, needs to be improved, etc.

7. Determine the sales market

It's important to know your target market. Of course, unforeseen situations can also occur. It may turn out that you will buy something that you did not expect and will not take the product that you were betting on. But if you manage to narrow the sales market as much as possible, then you are more likely to be able to find buyers for the released products, meet the needs of buyers, and sell the product with great success.

These are just recommendations, they cannot predetermine the success or failure of your new product. It is difficult to calculate and predict all the nuances. But you will have the opportunity to better familiarize yourself with the target market, thereby studying in more detail the requirements of consumers for the goods of your type, and, accordingly, to some extent anticipate the degree of expected demand.

Based on materials

Hello dear reader! I am glad to welcome you to the vastness of our business magazine.

Recently, my colleagues and I thought about the question of which product is the most popular in Russia. I think every thinker sooner or later comes up with this question. Personally, he began to torment me from the moment when we decided to launch our online store, but that's another story.

Usually, one question causes a series of subsequent ones, so today there will be not only the top-selling goods in Russia, Ukraine and the CIS - we will also consider with you:

  1. trending products in online sales;
  2. what is in demand on message boards (www.avito.ru);
  3. top 10 purchased products worldwide;
  4. which is currently being bought by a Slavic brother in China (using the resource ru.aliexpress.com).

Purpose of this articlegeneral development, expansion of consciousness. You will learn how to analyze the demand for a product and its seasonality using publicly available Internet tools, and most importantly, you will be able to show off new knowledge in front of your comrades. Let's start!

The best selling product in Russia and Ukraine

This information is unlikely to help you find a niche for your store, but at least it's interesting. You have a minute to think for yourself which product is the best-selling in Russia.

And no, the answer is not food, not cigarettes or even alcohol, but we buy it almost every time we go shopping in a store or market. In general, the purchase of this product takes place automatically. Have you guessed?

So, the title of the best-selling product in Russia is the usual one. plastic bag ... Even on such a seemingly insignificant product, you can make millions of rubles.

The world has already begun to realize that plastic products cause great harm to the environment. environment... The problem is that polyethylene does not decompose for a long time, and this leads to the death of 1 million birds, 100,000 marine mammals and a huge number of schools of fish. In the USA and Europe, cellophane bags began to be abandoned.

What to focus on when choosing a product for sale?

If you are interested in a product for sale, you should go the other way. You shouldn't be looking for the most popular goods, which are bought by the population in “wagons”. First of all, we need to look at the prospects and profitability - our product must also be ready for unfavorable conditions, since economic crises are not uncommon now.

The list of the most bought goods in Russia contains the following:

  • small household appliances;
  • electrical goods;
  • sanitary goods;
  • everyday tools;
  • household chemicals;
  • clothing and footwear;
  • childen's goods;
  • other goods of daily use.

Let's go through the list of the most demanded products:

  • meat (beef, pork, chicken, turkey);
  • semi-finished products;
  • chicken eggs;
  • frozen seafood (fish);
  • vegetable and butter;
  • cow's milk;
  • flour and pasta;
  • sugar and salt;
  • Black tea;
  • cereals (buckwheat, rice, millet, oats);
  • vegetables (potatoes, carrots, onions, cabbage);
  • apples, bananas.

Has something more demand, something is smaller. How to decide?

  1. Focus on your interest and think what is closer to your heart.
  2. Everything is learned in comparison: in order to make a choice in favor of a particular product, an analysis is needed (there will be a separate article about this).

It is beyond the scope of the article, so we will consider this problem in more detail another time. And now let's start compiling a rating of the most bought goods by Russians on the Internet. Go!

Top best-selling products on the Internet in 2017

The Internet is a large and interesting market for three reasons:

  1. now the Internet coverage in Russia is about 74%, while there is a constant growth;
  2. share of older users age group also increases;
  3. mobile Internet audience rushes at cosmic speed (30-40% of people visit our site from smartphones or tablets).

70% of all Russian Internet users entered the network at least once from a mobile device - a year ago, for example, this value was 56%.

Where does this rapid growth of the Internet lead? Together with it, the demand for goods and services increases, and this is what we need. Next, we'll look at:

  1. the most demanded and popular products in online stores;
  2. the most trending and hot products on one-page pages for today.

1. Search for a product in demand for an online store

In an effort to track the most in-demand and popular products in online stores that are best bought by the public in 2016, we came up with the following top 10 list.

  1. Small household appliances are the leader in online sales today. The low price and compact size make these products almost ideal (but this product is not suitable for sale in your online store).
  2. Perfumes and cosmetics .
  3. Mobile devices.
  4. Laptops and tablets.
  5. Internet gifts and toys.
  6. Licensed software.
  7. Clothes and footwear.
  8. Books. Surprisingly, paper books are still popular. It would seem that they are expensive, in addition, there are many sites where you can download the literature of interest in electronic form for free. However, this does not stop paper books from selling.
  9. Online ticket booking. You will not be able to imagine how many planes are in the air now (when you have a free minute, go to flightradar24.com - this will expand the boundaries of your consciousness).
  10. Large home appliances.

Most of the listed products will not work if you are planning to open an online store from scratch. Problems and breakdowns can arise with equipment, and in order to make money normally, you need to order in bulk. It is unrealistic to compete with large players who take goods in large wholesale and sell at prices typical of regular stores.

2. One-page: what is it and why is it needed?

One-page, landing page, landing page, landing page are all synonyms.

There is such a category as wow-goods (in Russian wow = wow) - impulse demand goods. Have you ever had such a thing that you walk past a shop or kiosk, saw an advertisement for a product on TV or the Internet, and you immediately wanted to buy it, although before that you did not even know about its existence? Chances are high that it was a product from this category. TV shops often sell wow goods too. Here are some examples:

  • an effortless slimming belt;
  • simulators that pump muscles without your participation;
  • all kinds of economists of water, light, fuel, etc .;
  • creams to enlarge something;
  • copies of branded watches, iPhones.

Are you familiar with CPA networks, affiliate marketing and traffic arbitrage? If not, there will be a separate detailed article about this. In short, a CPA network is an intermediary between a webmaster (the person who works with sites and traffic) and advertisers who have a product. They are ready to pay a commission to the webmaster for promoting and selling the product. CPA networks sell wow products through one-page sites. Remember the phrase that demand creates supply? In the case of these guys, the opposite is true.

Here is one of the many paters' networks - //m1-shop.ru/. After registration at the link //m1-shop.ru/ofers, the offered goods will be available, with which you can familiarize yourself (about 300 offers). I will cite 10 of them that were top at the time of this writing.

So, your attention is presented to the top of the most popular goods that sell through one-page sites in large volumes.

  1. Mask for blackheads and acne Black Mask.
  2. Solar powered PowerBank.
  3. Army Wrist Watch Amst.
  4. AB Gymnic belt.
  5. Corrector MAC.
  6. Waist Trainer Corset.
  7. Mangosteen is a slimming syrup.
  8. FishHungry Bite Activator.
  9. Hair spray Ultra Hair System.
  10. Titan gel.

Some data from Avito - the largest bulletin board in Russia

I tried to find information for 2016, but only came across an official report two years earlier. Since there is fish without fish and cancer, we will continue to talk about 2014. However, the information is interesting and useful, so there will be something to think about.

Carrying out the research, Avito analysts found out that website users skimmed 34.4 billion rubles in such product categories as:

  • personal belongings;
  • goods for home and summer cottages;
  • hobbies and leisure;
  • Appliances;
  • goods for pets.

A third of the turnover was taken up by the categories "Personal belongings" and "Goods for home and summer cottages" (6.5 and 5.5 billion rubles, respectively). Funny point: Compared to the previous year, sales in these categories grew almost the same - by 38.6% and 38.3%.

And the best-selling category of goods turned out to be “ Consumer electronics»: Laptops, computers, video and photo cameras, smartphones and other gadgets for 15.2 billion rubles were sold on Avito. The amount is not small, but when compared with the previous year, the growth is only 13.2%.

3.5 billion rubles were spent on Hobby and Leisure, an increase of 47.4%. And they did not spare money on pets and spent 4.7 billion rubles: the annual growth was as much as 82%.

  • fan;
  • netbook;
  • swimsuit;
  • smartphone;
  • prom dress;
  • tent;
  • Yorkshire Terrier;
  • video card;

From this list, we can conclude that demand is strongly influenced by the season.

How to analyze the seasonality of a product?

If you are reading this article because you are about to open an online store or start your own business, it is important not to miscalculate the seasonality of the product.

Let's look at the product that is at the beginning of the top on Avito - a fan.

To analyze seasonality and demand, we will use the well-known service https://wordstat.yandex.ru/. It is designed to measure user interest that can be applied to the product we have selected. Before starting work, you need to register / log in to the service. If you do not want to constantly pop up captcha, it is better to immediately disable adblock or its equivalent.

Next, we select the region that interests us (in my case, I look at the data for Russia, Ukraine and other CIS countries). Next, in a special field, I enter the request “buy a fan”, as it more accurately reflects the intention of users than just “fan”.

The service shows that over the last month there were 236,554 impressions for this request (wow, not bad!). We can conclude that the product is in demand. And I'll check the seasonality of this product! I just did a search for "By words", now I will switch the checkbox to "History of requests" and see what happens. The graph shows that in 2016 the demand for fans has doubled compared to last year (apparently, this year is VERY hot). So, if you bought fans and started selling them in the winter, it probably wouldn't work. Therefore, never buy a product without testing demand!

Of course, the example I gave is obvious - it is clear that it is hot in summer, and the demand for fans will be greater than in the cold season. However, not all products are that obvious. It is also better to look for niches where the schedule is just starting to climb - it is better to prepare for the season in advance.

Rating of the most popular products from China

It is difficult to determine the sales leader of the Chinese market, because everything is bought on it and in huge quantities. Have you ever ordered something from China? Personally, I ordered a watch, a scale, a case for e-book, a bag, a UV lamp and all sorts of other things. If anyone does not know, here are 2 sites where the bulk of the population of Russia, Ukraine and the CIS orders goods from China:

  1. Aliexpress is more designed for retail purchase - here you can order goods in one copy without any problems. However, sometimes it is more profitable to buy a product in a regular online store than here.
  2. Alibaba is a large wholesaler: prices for goods are much cheaper, but you will have to order in bulk. Delivery of goods often costs several times more than their cost.
  1. Cell phones;
  2. clothing and footwear, including copies of world brands;
  3. laptops and tablets;
  4. Appliances;
  5. computer components and accessories;
  6. goods for sports and recreation;
  7. bed dress;
  8. furniture;
