The beak is massive. The plumage is dense, dense, completely snow-white. The wings are medium-sized, adjacent to the body. Roosters have a small curved tail. In chickens, the tail is practically not prominent.

Broiler Cobb 500 is highly regarded for the uniformity of flocks. Livestock of the same age will have practically the same weight. Already by 1 month of life, individuals gain up to 2 kg, after another 2 weeks the weight goes to the level of 2.5 kg. 50-day-old birds weigh more than 3 kg.

The main growth occurs before 80 days. After the rate decreases, the meat begins to acquire toughness. The most favorable period for slaughter is considered to be 40-60 days.... Some people prefer slaughtering at 30 days to reduce body fat and maintain juiciness. Keeping longer than 4 months is considered unprofitable, since feed intake is high and there is no gain.

The meat tastes good, breast fillet is considered a dietary product.

Egg production of the breed

Few people think about the egg production of this breed. Broiler farming is mainly done with the aim of obtaining meat. Meanwhile, you can, of course, use eggs for food and for breeding. A Cobb 500 chicken produces about 100-120 eggs in one year (2-3 per week).

Sexual maturity occurs at 7-8 months. A limited number of chickens are left for egg production, the rest are sent for slaughter.

Roosters and hens of the breed cannot be called aggressive. They are quite calm in everyday conditions, rarely raise fights and noise unnecessarily. The main character flaw is considered to be cases of cannibalism with insufficient nutrition. Young animals especially suffer from such a sin with a deficiency of protein and calcium.

As a rule, weaker tribesmen suffer, so diet and behavior must be monitored.

The method of keeping on a soft bedding is practiced. Small aviaries are abundantly covered with shavings, sawdust, peat, chopped corn stalks and cobs. In summer, the thickness of the litter is oriented at 5 cm, in winter it will be necessary to increase the flooring to 15 cm. Cobb 500 chickens easily live in cramped conditions. There can be up to 20 heads per 1 square meter. Sex segregation is often practiced.

But most often cages are used for the breed. In them, you can quickly catch up with the birds to the desired mass and only a light layer of bedding is required. The space in the cage house is used more efficiently and economically, and cleaning is easier. In addition, it is more convenient to monitor the health of the livestock.


Broilers Cobb 500 are kept on soft bedding or on a net.

A room with an aviary or cages should have good ventilation (but not drafts). It is not necessary to make windows, enough artificial light for 16-18 hours a day. Light is required so that birds can easily find food, eat well and grow faster. Air temperature - 28-30C heat.

To get a good mass, you need to decide what to feed the Cobb 500 herd. Proper nutrition is very important, not only for weight gain, but also for the prevention of infectious diseases. Food and water are always offered in a slightly warm form - cold ones are difficult to digest.


Adolescents for slaughter and roosters for breeding are fed with an emphasis on protein.

In the early days, broiler chickens are given chopped eggs, light dry cottage cheese, soaked oats and millet, and crushed wheat. The grains are pre-cleaned from chaff. Cereals should be moist, but without excess liquid. From 9 days, boiled and chopped fish waste, mixed feed are added to the diet.

From the 14th day, grated boiled potatoes, carrots, chopped greens (parsley, leaf lettuce), tops, grass (clover, young nettle), curdled milk are introduced. Adolescents for slaughter and roosters for breeding are fed with an emphasis on protein. Layers need more greens, vegetables and grains.

At any age, it is useful to add shell rock powder, egg shells, chalk to replenish calcium reserves. Vitamins can be given separately, but it is preferable to use dry compound feed PK-5, which provides for the presence of the necessary microelements.


For fattening Cobb 500 broilers, it is preferable to use dry feed PK-5.

PK-5 is mixed with grain mash, dairy and vegetable products, fish, meat waste, meat and bone meal, the above additives. Such a complex in the feeder will allow the chicks to stay healthy and gain muscle mass at a high speed with a minimum of fat.

Important. When introducing dry compound feed, the amount of water in the chicken coop should be increased to avoid digestive problems.

For the winter, vegetables are dried, then soaked in the usual way. The herb is prepared in the form of flour or brooms, which are then steamed and given to the birds. It is sometimes helpful to give broilers potato peels without dirt. Feeders should be cleaned regularly and food is fresh at every meal. Meals - 3-4 per day.

It is easier to purchase chicks from private breeders. Eggs are cheaper when purchased in bulk from poultry farms. The cost of incubation material is lower. But many people prefer to buy just young animals, since they clearly show the rate of weight gain, and therefore health. Chicks easily endure transportation, quickly adapt to a new place.

With further reproduction, it is better to remove the eggs; use an incubator for nursing. Broiler layers are bad, maternal instinct tends to zero. In addition, eggs and babies are more likely to be crushed when cramped.

Roosters with chickens are often kept separately, connecting individual individuals exclusively for mating. To increase productivity, some breeders collect semen from males and then artificially fertilize females. The technology of the procedure can be obtained from veterinarians.


Chicks easily endure transportation, quickly adapt to a new place.

In the incubator, eggs are placed horizontally or turned upside down with a blunt end. The temperature is kept at 37-38C for 21 days. Ventilation should be present, but without drafts and air cooling.

2 weeks after hatching, the babies are kept at 30C in round-the-clock lighting. The light should not blind the chicks. From day 15, daylight hours are reduced to 18 hours. The litter is changed regularly.

Important. Dirty litter is a dangerous source of infectious diseases.

Like any breed, the Cobb 500 has its own strengths and weaknesses.

The main disadvantage is the intolerance of cold weather and the need for long daylight hours. In many regions, heat and light have to be provided with artificial sources, which leads to decent energy costs.

Which hybrid to choose is a matter of preference for the individual farmer. Cobb 500 is better suited for meat sale. For universal purposes of keeping, when the color of the carcass is not a priority, and the number of eggs is important, it is optimal to choose Ross 308.

Modern breeders offer farmers new and new types of crosses - chickens, gaining the maximum weight of meat in a couple of months. How much chick growth should be required for broiler management to be economically beneficial for the farmer?

Determine the weight

To understand that chicks are gaining weight well, it is recommended to weigh the birds once a week. For these purposes, you can use any convenient weights. But given the mobility of chickens, the most accurate result can be obtained when weighing on an electronic scale. Below is a table of broiler weights by day, which shows the target weight gain for broiler chickens.

The broiler weight table shows that the optimal weekly weight gain of birds should be at least 100 grams in the first week of life, followed by doubling. To obtain accurate data, broilers must be weighed the same number of days at the same time. It is advisable to weigh before chicks eat.

About the features of weight gain

If, after 7-14 days of regular feeding, the weight of the broiler chicken does not increase according to the data in the table, then the mode and composition of the feed is chosen incorrectly. In order to obtain an increase in the weight of chickens according to the data in the table, it is important to observe the diet in the first 30 days of the chicks' life. How correct and balanced the diet is, is shown by the first control weighing on the 7-10th day of life. The third weighing, which is done on day 21, should show the weight of the chickens equal to 800 grams. If the weight of each chicken is less, then the diet, calorie content and composition of the diet should be revised.

About mass in different periods

Novice poultry farmers often ask themselves what is the weight of newly hatched broilers? Live chicken in the first minutes of life weighs at least 40 grams. There are also larger birds. With less weight, the survival rate of chicks is not great. If the mass of the chick is even 2-3 grams more than the standard, then in the future this individual will be larger and heavier than the rest of the broilers.

The first serious conclusions about the correctness of the selection and composition of the diet can be made on the tenth day of the chicks' life. Considering that the total life expectancy in broiler farms is no more than 2 months, 10 days is a significant part of the life of chickens. So, on day 10, each broiler should weigh at least 150-200 grams. In the following days, the body weight of each chicken should increase rapidly.

The next control measurement of the weight of the chicks should be carried out at the age of 14 days. At this stage, each chicken should weigh 370-450 grams. Reviews of poultry farmers claim that these indicators are very important. If the weight of broilers meets the standards in the table, then the ration is drawn up correctly.

If the nutrition and care meet the norms and standards, then already in a month broilers in live weight will gain 4 times in weight compared to the indicators obtained at the age of 10 days. On the thirtieth day of life, each broiler should weigh between 800 grams and 1 kg. After another two weeks, the live weight of the chicks increases to 2 kg. Of course, poultry farmers do not send chickens for slaughter at the age of one and a half months.

Starting from 45 days of life, birds begin to add the following components to the feed:

A variety of greens and herbs.

Chalk additives.

River or seashells.

If all recommendations for catering are followed, then already at two months of age, the weight of each live Cobb-500 broiler will be at least 2.5 kg. For older chickens, vitamin supplements play an important role in weight gain. You can use ready-made veterinary preparations, or you can saturate the diet of birds with herbs. Part of the grain feed must be replaced with boiled potatoes, which are mixed into a damp mash.

For good weight gain, Cobb-500 broilers are recommended to give fermented milk products.
