1.Crop Guide Overlays

3. Hide clipped areas

To make it easier to understand how good the frame will look after clicking the Accept button, you can hide the cropped crop fields by clicking H... This will allow you to see the final result before you confirm the crop. In the settings there are more possibilities to adjust the crop preview: click on the crop settings icon, where you can change the intensity of the darkening of the cropped area, as well as its color.

4. Classic crop mode

In Photoshop CC, you have probably already encountered the fact that cropping has become different than in previous versions... Namely, the cropping window has become static, and the image itself needs to be moved and adjusted to the grid. For those who prefer to use the classic crop mode, in which you need to move not the picture itself, but the frame, you can do this by pressing the key P that will switch you to Classic Mode... You can also do this in the crop settings menu in the settings panel.

5. UsageFront Image

When working with two documents with different resolution and image sizes, you can easily crop one document to fit the other using the option Front Image... First, you need to open both documents and select the one that you want to use as a reference. Next select Crop Tool , and on the pop-up window in the options bar, select FrontImage or press the key I... This will allow you to remember the size and resolution of the first document. Then you can switch to another document in which Crop Tool will already contain the size and resolution setting of the first image.

6. How can you confirm cropping

In addition to clicking on the checkmark in the settings panel, there are other options for how you can confirm the cropping you made:

- Press Enter
- Double click on the crop area
- Click on the icon to confirm in the settings panel

7. Perspective Crop Tool

If there is an object in the frame with a pronounced perspective, such as a building, then its planes may not be parallel to the frame. In this case, you can use Perspective Crop Tool... To crop, you need to mark the four corners and press Enter after the crop box is formed. The finished frame will be located frontally to you with flat planes. If you want to straighten the subject without cropping, use Auto Upright in the tab Lens Corrections in settings Camera Raw Filter.

8. Reversible cropping

The best way to preserve the "cut-off" parts of the image when cropping is to uncheck the box. Delete cropped pixels in the crop settings. Another way is to create a layer Smart Object that you can crop without fear of irreversible consequences even regardless of whether the checkbox was turned on Delete Cropped Pixels, or not.

9. Expanding boundaries

While most people use cropping to crop away from a photo, some use it to add something to an image by expanding its borders. To do this, you just need to drag the corners of the cropping frame outside the picture, and if you have a background layer, pixels of the same color as the background layer will be added to the picture, if not, then the expansion areas will remain transparent.

10. Straighten your photo by cropping

You can also use Crop Tool to straighten your photos. Just holding Command / Ctrl, click and drag to draw a line that indicates the horizon of the photo. You can also use any vertical straight lines to align the image.

Cropping is one of the most basic edits ever made in a program. Poor cropping (or lack of it) can ruin an image, while good cropping can make it ten times better by cutting off useless or distracting material.

There is a reason why professional photography looks so good. In addition to the fact that they are filmed with high-quality cameras and they are retouched after processing, they are also compositionally very high-quality.

Cropping means removing distracting elements of an image by cutting off unwanted parts around the edges. It highlights the object, attracts the viewer's eye to it.

Let's explore a few basic principles.

Once you understand the rule of thirds, the compositional principle used by photography and video professionals, you will find it in almost every image you see. Its meaning is dividing each frame into nine equal parts using an imaginary tic-tac-toe board.

Please note that the main parts of the wolf's body are located strictly in their square: ears, eyes, jaw. Majority digital cameras allow you to display such a grid on the camera display, helping you frame the frame. You may have to delve deeper into the camera menus or read the instruction manual to figure out how to turn it on.

As well as applying the rule of thirds, pros often crop images in unexpected ways. This is another way to increase the visual interest of a photo to grab the viewer's attention.

This is especially important when you are dealing with very small images, such as in a thumbnail gallery or on a website where several images are vying to grab attention. In such small images, you cannot see a lot of details (or not see them at all); and if there are people in the photo, you can immediately give up trying to identify them. Here are some tips for creating really attractive tiny images:

Instead of reducing the scale of the original, focus on one element of the image. There is often no need to include the entire subject for people to understand what it is.
Sharpen again after resizing. Even if you sharpened the original (digitally sharpened the focus), go for it and sharpen it again after resizing using the Unsharp Mask filter.
To add grace to your miniature, give it a y or.

Now that you have grasped a few basic principles, you are ready to familiarize yourself with the many cropping methods that Photoshop provides, starting with the most common ones.

Cropping and concealing

Photoshop usually removes the outer edges. They disappear forever. However, if you're cropping a multi-layered file or a single-layer file with an unfixed background layer, you can choose not to delete the cropped material, making it easier to get it back in case you change your mind.

To do this, go to the options bar and check the radio button Cropped Area into position Hide... The program will hide the clipping region outside the document window instead of deleting it. This way, even if you don't see it on screen, it will still be part of your file.

If you need to return the cropped area, select the menu command Image - Show All to resize the canvas and display anything beyond the edge of the document (cropped in this case). If you want to return only part of the clipped area, press the V key to select and drag the image back into the field of view.

Note

Modes Delete and Hide will become available after you draw the frame, and they are active only when the file does not contain a docked background layer or when you crop a multi-layer file (the rest of the time they are grayed out).

Crop with perspective

If you've shot an image at an angle and then find that you need to straighten it, you can crop the image and change its perspective at the same time.

Note

The program will not allow cropping an image with perspective when the switch is set to Hide... In this case, set the switch Cut off into position Delete and then check the boxPerspective.

To crop with perspective, first draw a box around the object you want to straighten (it doesn't have to be aligned exactly with the object, but you do need to capture the entire object).

Next, check the box on the Options Bar, and then drag the corner handles so that the frame lines are parallel or overlaid with the angled image lines. If done properly, the cropped image will look straight and beautiful. However, be careful: this tool distorts images, and as a result, living things may look like you were photographing their reflection in a crooked mirror.

Cropping to a specific size

Sometimes it is necessary to crop accurately, for example when you crop a photo to fit into a 4x6 frame. In this case, you can use the parameters to enter values for the width, height, and resolution of the final image to constrain the cropping to a certain size.

Note

As with most dialog boxes and panels, any changes made in the options bar are saved until you change them again. So the next time you crop an image to a specific size, be sure to press the button. Delete / Clear to clear the dimension boxes. Then your cropping frames will not be limited to the last used dimensions.

To enter custom dimensions, enter values in the fields Width and Height... Alternatively, you can select an option from the list of typical sizes shown in the drop-down list. If you plan to print the final result, you will also need to enter the resolution; if not, you can leave this field blank.

Note

When entering custom dimensions, be sure to include units such as pixels or inches. Otherwise, Photoshop will assume that you mean the unit of measurement specified in the settings, which may not be quite what you need.

Now that you have drawn the frame, it is constrained by the proportions (ratio between width and height) of the dimensions you entered. Once the crop is accepted, the area within the frame will match the entered dimensions perfectly.

Cropping with selection tools

You can also crop the image within the selection. This technique is useful if you've created a selection and then need to crop the image to approximately the same size. This method works best (although the rest of the selection tools work as well). Once created, select the menu command Image - Crop.

When should you crop an image?

Very often, due to lack of time, we are forced to neglect building the correct composition in the frame directly during shooting.

But thanks to Photoshop, we have the ability to change the composition after shooting using the Crop Tool or Frame / Crop in the Russian version of the program.

It also has additional features designed to teach the basics of composition, such as the Rule of Thirds. We will tell you more about this later.

With the help of Crop, we can not only get rid of unnecessary objects in the frame, but also correct very common mistakes. For example, we can correct the horizon filled up in the photo, which is a gross mistake and annoys viewers no less than the picture hanging crookedly on the wall.

Here's how to crop the horizon parallel to the top and bottom of your photo.

Sometimes it is difficult to prepare images for printing when the aspect ratio of the cropped image does not match the aspect ratio of the image that was not cropped. This problem is especially significant if you want to combine photographs into one series.

We will show you how to crop photos using the Crop / Frame tool, while maintaining the shape and proportions of the original photo.

Where is the Crop Tool or Crop Tool?

In the Photoshop Crop Tool you will find in the Toolbar in the uppermost section of it, which indicates the frequency of using this tool.

If you click on the tool's icon and hold down the mouse button, you will see that it has several subsections, for example the Slice Tool, which is usually used by web designers to clip sections of a Photoshop document for web pages. In early versions of the program, Slice Tools occupied a separate niche, but over time they were merged with Crop Tools.

What can I do with the Crop Tool?

Here we show you how to use this tool to improve the composition of your photos, fix clipped horizons, and resize the image for printing.

Improving the composition

Looking at the footage, we choose the most good photos, and as often happens, there are very few such photos. The chances of getting a good shot are increased by using the Rule of Thirds.

According to this compositional technique, the frame is divided into nine equal parts using a grid. By placing our subjects in the grid-generated compartments, at the intersection of lines, or along the lines, we dramatically improve the composition of the photo.

Professional photographer David Bailey, using a photograph of a girl, showed how effectively you can crop a portrait, leaving part of the image out of the frame and cropping the top of the model's head, thereby making it more restrained and at the same time intimate.

Get creative with the framing process, use a square frame instead of the standard one, this option often looks more impressive.

Using the Crop Grid Blend Mode

1. Draw a square

Open the original image. Select the Crop tool from the toolbar. Hold down the Shift key (this combination makes the cropping area square) select the area you want to keep. The area that will be deleted after cropping will turn into transparent gray, and the untouched part of the image will remain 100% visible.

2. Maintain balance

In the options bar, set the View mode to Rule of Thirds. Drag the crop square so that the intersections of the lines are over the model's eyes. Next, place the mouse cursor behind the cropping square and rotate it to change the angle of the model's head and achieve symmetry.

3. Get creative with cropping

Now drag the crop square to the right to keep the left side of the model's face out of its border. The result still meets the Rule of Thirds, with the eye, nose, and mouth in the left third, hair in the middle, and empty space in the right third.

4. Changing the crop screen settings

The area outside the cropping window is displayed as a gray semi-transparent screen by default, which helps you focus directly on the area that remains after cropping.

If you want to completely hide an area to be clipped, you can change its opacity. To do this, in the Options Panel, set the Opacity to 100% in the Enable Crop Shield section.

You can also choose any color to display the clipping area, or by unchecking the Enable Crop Shield checkbox, completely disable the crop screen.

Correcting errors by cropping

In addition to improving composition, cropping can also correct some shooting mistakes. In order to capture the entire landscape, we had to zoom out as much as possible, as a result, the edges of the hood got into the frame. Also in the upper left corner of the photo we see the unnecessary darkening.

We photographed from a boat, so it was quite difficult to take a photo with a perfect horizon line, the horizon was a little blocked, but fortunately, there is an opportunity to correct such blots by cropping.

Select the Crop Tool in the toolbar, select our photo, set the view mode to Rule of Thirds.

Then hold down the Shift key, in this case it will preserve the original aspect ratio of the photo. With the Shift key held down, move the mouse cursor to the upper left corner of the photo and drag it so as to leave behind the cropping area and the hood included in the frame.

Drag the crop box to place the rock in the lower left corner of the grid. The mountain must remain in the center of the net. To correct a clipped horizon line, position the cursor outside the cropping frame and rotate it so that the horizon line runs parallel to the horizontal grid lines.

Change of size

Sometimes, when we send a series of photos for printing, we get partially normally printed photos that take up the entire sheet of photo paper, and partially cut off. We will now walk you through a step-by-step guide to framing correctly and accurately.

How do I resize a photo?

1. Choosing a scale

Open the original image. Select the Crop tool, on the left side of the options bar, click on the arrow located next to the tool icon and from the provided crop presets select 5 inch x 7 inch 300 ppi (5 inches x 7 inches, 300 pixels per inch).

2. Change the orientation of the photo

By default, the preset will create an orientation for a portrait photo, but we need a landscape format. To switch the orientation in the options bar there is a special button in the form of a rounded arrow, you can also change the orientation by pressing the X key on your keyboard.

3. Checking the size

To finish cropping, click on the tool icon and select Crop the Image in the pop-up window. Next go to Image> Image Size. Select inches as the unit of measurement. We will see that the image is 7 inches wide by 5 inches high with a resolution of 300 pixels per inch.

How to use the Crop / Frame tool

Below we have demonstrated the key parameters of the Crop / Frame tool. Take advantage of all the features of this invaluable tool, and we'll show you everything you need to know about this tool.

Fast switching. Click on this icon to change the preset image orientation. You can choose landscape or portrait orientation.
Overlay. To apply a Rule of Thirds grid, select Rule of Thirds from the list. Or choose another mesh that suits you.
Cropping screen darkens the area that will be clipped during cropping. To turn off the screen, uncheck the box.
Resetting a preset. Here you can set a preset for cropping with a specific size and resolution.
Reset. To reset a preset, click on the tool icon in the options bar and select Reset tool
Opacity and color. Decrease the Opacity of the Screen to make the area to be cropped more visible. You can also change the screen color here.

The main parameters of the tool

With the Crop Tool selected from the toolbar, click on the image and drag your mouse cursor to draw a crop box (01).

By default, the clipping area is highlighted with a gray semi-transparent screen, which sometimes makes it difficult to concentrate on the area we are going to leave, especially if the photo is black and white. In this case, you can change the color and opacity of the screen (03).

To apply cropping to the image, click on the tool icon. Or click on any other tool in the toolbar, then a pop-up window will appear in which the program will ask you if you are going to crop the image or not (04).

Cropping a photo- these are special actions to change the scale and position of the image within the boundaries of a given frame when taking a photo or when processing it in the Photoshop program, for storing and subsequent use of this photo.

Of course, you need to correctly crop photos when taking photos, but this is not always possible. But even if the photo is cropped perfectly at this stage, you may need to change its format for some purpose. It is more convenient to crop photos in the Photoshop program, since it has more opportunities for this.

Cropping photos in Photoshop after taking a photo is necessary in three main cases. First, if the photo needs to be output to some external device, such as a printer or TV. Secondly, if you need to remove image composition errors. And thirdly, for creative work such as creating collages.

Before cropping a photo

Cropping a photo is directly related to changing its size and resolution, which are closely related. By changing one of these values, the others change. Before cropping photos in Photoshop, you first need to recalculate the sizes and resolution, bring them to an understandable form, and only then work with them.

This is especially true for those files digital photos that were scanned from film negatives or slides. In this case, a high resolution, for example 2400 dpi, with a frame size of 36 by 24 mm. For accurate cropping of a photo in Photoshop, the dimensions should be an order of magnitude higher, and the resolution an order of magnitude lower.

To recalculate the size and resolution of a photo before cropping in the Photoshop program, you need to select the "Image size" item in the "Image" menu on the top panel in the "Image" menu. A window of the same name will open for setting the size and resolution of the photo. Faster this window can be opened using the "hot" buttons " Alt» + « Ctrl» + « I"(Fig. 1).

Immediately you need to uncheck the box next to the "Interpolation" item. This is necessary so that the image size and resolution change at the same time and affect each other. If the checkbox is checked, then when you change the resolution, only the dimension in pixels will decrease. The dimensions of the print will remain the same.

For example, if you uncheck the Interpolation checkbox and change the resolution from 2400 dpi to 300 dpi (Fig. 1), the dimension will remain the same, but the print dimensions will change from 3.5 x 2.2 to 27.9 x 17.5 cm. Such sizes are clearer to us and we can consciously work with them in the Photoshop program when cropping a photo.

How to crop photos

In Photoshop, you can crop photos in different ways, it depends on the final purpose of cropping. It should be borne in mind that cropping is a way of resizing a photo by cropping it from one or more sides. This process is irreversible and you need to think carefully before cutting a photo.

In order to crop a photo in Photoshop in a different way or in some other way, you need to crop not the photo itself, but its copy. The photo must be stored unchanged in a digital photo archive. All cropped copies of photographs must be kept separate from this photo archive.

Such separate storage of a photo allows you not to repeat the cropping process twice, and if you wish, you can crop the same photo in Photoshop at any time. Thus, you can crop any photo in different ways many times.

Before you start cropping a photo in Photoshop, you need to determine exactly what it is for. The type of cropping will depend on this - normal, with rotation or with image deformation. This must be determined in advance, since for each type of cropping, different methods and tools of the Photoshop program are used.

Photo Crop Tools

You can use several different tools to crop photos in Photoshop. Depending on the purpose of the crop, the the right tool or sharing them.

The main tool for cropping photos of the Photoshop program is “ Frame". Most often, photos are cropped using this particular tool.

You can use all the tools to crop photos in Photoshop excretions that create a dashed frame on the image - an ant path.

Trimming

This is the last cropping technique we'll look at today.

Trimming works by removing unnecessary pixels. Those. if there are transparent areas around the edges of the image, trimming will crop them.

Trimming is called in the Image -> Trim menu:
